I love you Laura.
WHAAAT??? " title="" border="0"/>
I saw him at the back of the stage after the show with Bret and Eugene for a split second, but that is so great that you met him!! He sounds awesome, I guess its not too surprising that not many people know who he is. I don't know if I could be able to go up to him if I saw him! More power to you!
It was nice to meet you too. But yea, the whole experience was pretty intense that it was hard to meet/talk with everyone.
Red wrote:I got to meet James Bobin! I actually went a little fangirl on him and confessed my love for all of his work and he seem kind of surprised and happy to be recognized. I got a picture with him and he put his arm around me and gave me a little squeeze. He was quite charming and really fun to meet.

Last Night
Over the Weekend: Flight of the Conchords at the Hollywood Bowl

"
Finally, comedy the way it's supposed to be--in an outdoor arena with disguised shrubs,"
joked Eugene Mirman, one of the three comics who opened for Flight of the Conchords at the Hollywood Bowl last Sunday, the last stop on their current tour. That's the irony behind Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie: two New Zealand musicians who've achieved success on HBO playing two unsuccessful musicians.
If the kid dressed in the aluminum-covered box was any indication, the duo's first song was the futuristic "
Robots."
The two were clad in plaid shirts and jeans, a far cry from the robot costumes they themselves wore last year when entering the stage at the Greek. The wardrobe change would come later, but the laughs were there from the start. Half the fun of watching these guys live is the between-song banter, which began with Clement and McKenzie talking about the excesses of touring. In FOTC's world, that would be avoiding complimentary hotel muffins and getting stuck in elevators.
All the ad-libbing they've perfected over the years is as important as the songs, which included metal folk, rap folk, disco folk, reggaeton folk and folk folk performed over acoustic guitars, a toy piano, keyboards and even a glockenspiel. "
I prefer to call it a rock-enspiel,"
corrected Clement. And when they combine the two, it's comedy gold. "
Jenny,"
for example, is a he-said, she-said case of mistaken identity that sounds like the folk version of "
I Remember It Well"
from Gigi. But this is serious music, the kind symphonies play. That would explain why Clement and McKenzie were accompanied by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, which was really just a lone cellist named Nigel.
The duo clearly loves the opposite sex, especially on "
The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)"
and the minstrel ballad "
1353 (Woo a Lady),"
one of three new tunes. But it's on "
Business Time"
that baritone Clement really plays up his Don Juan/Knotts schtick, bragging about his two-mute love-making skills. He's that intense. Barry White, meet your half-white, half-Maori love child.
The two displayed a somber side, too, trying not to cry on "
I'm Not Crying."
It's just the onions. They also tackled a few issues-songs ("
We're into whatever Bono's into,"
said McKenzie), including the Pet Shop Boys-ian "
Inner City Pressure,"
'Think About It"
and "
Song for Epileptic Dogs."
("
Use your riches to stop these bitches' twitches."
)
If there's an FOTC staple that makes the "
nipple antennae"
of every fan go pointy, it's the space-themed "
Bowie,"
the most hilarious David Bowie parody since 1986's Labyrinth. The night would only progress. During the glam rockin' "
Demon Woman,"
the two finally changed into matching metallic jumpsuits, with Clement wearing a suspended windswept scarf -- which has to be rock's greatest neck accessory since the dog collar -- followed by a four-song encore, including the Black Eyed Peas-inspired "
Sugalumps."
It was then the duo jumped into the audience and grabbed cameras to point at their "
cannonballs."
Before leaving, Clement and McKenzie made sure to tear up the stage, knocking over instruments, albeit in a gingerly, non-damaging Flight of the Conchords way. They told us they were freaky.

Has a video of Demon Woman shown up yet? At the end when they were 'trashing' the stage, Jemaine pretended to play the keyboard with... something other than his hands.

I KNOW NO ONE WILL WANT TO READ ALL THIS BUT HERE GOES:
(A lot has already been said, so this is just some of the details I remember and my opinion of the show... Pictures should be coming tonight!)
I finally got to see all three opening acts together- Eugene, Arj, AND Kristen! This was my first time seeing Kristen. I wasn't that familiar with her stand up so a lot was a surprised. Katie and few others talked about the cake-eating SVU audition bit, but didn't want to show me anything in case she did it live... which she did. " title="" border="0"/>
Then there was Arj. He did a solid set- mixed some jokes I've heard with a lot I haven't. I forgot how much I love Arj.
I was surprised to see Eugene last, really. He's my favorite out of the three, but I just figured they'd save Arj or Kristen last since they had larger roles in the show. With all the shows I've seen this month, I've seen Eugene's set six times. XD But I loved it every time! For the California shows he added some jokes about bashing the tea party movement, which I appreciated.
Ok. While our current seats were great and close, we underestimated how far off to the side we were. It was looking like once Nigel would sit down, we may have had trouble even seeing all the guys from the extreme angle. And we couldn't see the screens at all either.
I had noticed throughout the opening acts that no one was sitting in the first row in the next section over that closer to the center. While the pool area wasn't full yet, I found it strange that not one single person had claimed their seat in that row. After thinking this, I saw two guys sort of speed walk to that front row and sat down suspiciously. I knew they just upgraded themselves!
Nik convinced me so ask security if we could move because my "
milkshake face"
was so innocent that no one could say no to it. After saying I wouldn't do it, 45 seconds later I made a 180 decision and decided to go ask. " title="" border="0"/>
I went up to a guy in a suit that looked kinda important rather than a security guard and asked if we could move up if no one was sitting there by the beginning of the show. He gave me a sly nod and a wink. I was like "
Really?! Thank you!!"
and did it again and told me to be sneaky about it. We talked to him for a tiny bit and he was from New Zealand!
As we were getting closer to the show, I was getting supremely anxious since the seats were still open and our new New Zealand Mr. Suit Man friend had gone away somewhere. I was hoping he could back us up if anything went wrong...
Once they began to play the New Zealand is Yours avert- I was like "
LET'S GO!!!"
XD We must have moved swiftly enough because we sat down next to the guys and had no problems for the rest of the night... TicketMaster must have not sold those tickets or something?
Then the show started and of course it was just marvelous from there. The sound system was just gorgeous. They didn't play anything they hadn't played the last few shows, and from memory there wasn't too much spontaneous banter since people would yell out but they would be too far away to hear. The pool area was pretty well behaved except for a lot of wooing which I know we helped with that!
Jemaine acknowledged us a few times with funny "
rock on!"
-esque faces when we yelled. From my perspective he was looking at us after: "
As we all know, turn into Jelly Beans!"
like in Caik's picture. Later when Bret asked if the audience wanted a song from Season 1 or Season 2, we all started yelling "
Two!"
and held up the peace sign with both hands. He flashed the peace sign back at us but then proceeded with the Issues banter. " title="" border="0"/> Nigel would look at us I think since we were almost right in front of him. I like to think his facial expressions sometimes conveyed some thought along the line of: "
You bitches be crazy!"
when he looked at us. (Remind you this is probably all in my silly head.)
Right now my favorite parts are Epileptic Dogs (getting the crowd together like that and singing at the Hollywood Bowl has to be one of my favorite concert experiences yet), Inner City Pressure,(AMAZING every time...) 1353 (I had heard it at the other shows, but seeing it so up close...), You Don't Love me Anymore, Boom, Demon Woman, and of course Sugalumps....
We may have found out prior to the show that they were going to be going up past the pool seats to dance on the barricade between the pool and garden boxes. So we were somewhat prepared for that. Katie, Jessica, and Sara overheard a security guard talking about it. But when they started mixing in with the pool audience it was an all out riot! ...but like an excited, non-dangerous riot. Everyone was standing up and moving to get the best view. When Jemaine ran to take a picture of Nigel's crotch with Jessica's camera, he had to practically zig-zag his way through the fans. My heart dropped each time he ran around the corner where we were sitting. (I swear I could have tripped him if I wanted! XDDD ;
) ) Its so incredible how fearless they are!!
Ugh the whole show and experience was just once in a lifetime. I got to see my favorite band... from the first row... in one of the most famous venues in the world.

Funny how you remember random things after the show...When you first got into the Bowl, going uphill, there was a very loud gal yelling to come buy a beer. Halfway up there was a guy doing it, calling out "
Have a beer with Flight of the Conchord"

I haven't done a recap but I'll just comment on Coco's since I was right next to her.
Now, you know they're going to come out and stand here, right? *puts hand on wall* And they're going to play around with the audience a bit."
I told Sara what I heard and we did a bunch of this: , and then we told everyone else.
It was a perfect night, basically.
He was super official looking, kind of like a Kiwi secret service agent. It was really sweet of him to give us the OK to move up. I'm sure it would have been kind of a bummer for the guys to see a whole row empty right in the front, so we were doing them a favor.onlyalways wrote:

After the guy left the pool circle area, I started to get so scared that security was going to make us go back to our regular seats. During the whole 20 minute break, all I could do was sit there and worry. But it worked out!As we were getting closer to the show, I was getting supremely anxious since the seats were still open and our new New Zealand Mr. Suit Man friend had gone away somewhere. Basically, same to all of this. " title="" border="0"/> I really loved the moments where you could hear 17,000 people singing along.Right now my favorite parts are Epileptic Dogs (getting the crowd together like that and singing at the Hollywood Bowl has to be one of my favorite concert experiences yet), Inner City Pressure,(AMAZING every time...) 1353 (I had heard it at the other shows, but seeing it so up close...), You Don't Love me Anymore, Boom, Demon Woman, and of course Sugalumps....
It was the same NZ official guy! I think he was our very own Kiwi angel. I was standing there talking to Sara P. and I overheard him talking to the security guard who was working next to the wall behind Sara and Jessica's seats. He was all, "We may have found out prior to the show that they were going to be going up past the pool seats to dance on the barricade between the pool and garden boxes. Thank you, Courtney
That's my girl!
I don't think they sang Back on the Road... I guess the band's broken up until the next gig ;
).
I noticed that in Glasgow as well when they "
broke"
the barriers at the M&G. The security put up the barrier to divide their fans from them but Jemaine and Bret went in front of it and started to mingle with fans. I even remember telling Sarah standing next to me how surprised I was and it's one more reason to love them for that
I don't think they should be afraid of a John Lennon situation .

So we were somewhat prepared for that. Katie, Jessica, and Sara overheard a security guard talking about it.
Now, you know they're going to come out and stand here, right? *puts hand on wall* And they're going to play around with the audience a bit."
I told Sara what I heard and we did a bunch of this: , and then we told everyone else.
OMG! That's the same guy that came out after the show and told us that the guys had left the venue and there would be no m&g. But then he kept talking to my group of friends like he was stalling us. Then when the official HB workers forced us to leave, Mr. Kiwi Angel walked out behind me and said softly to me that 2 guys that looked exactly like Bret and Jem were still inside and if I went and stood by the entrance at the fence I might see them. AND that I would want to stand to the left of the entrance so if they drove by in a van I could maybe catch a glimpse of them. He was of course right on all accounts!
