A distinctive Kiwi voice will bring a "
beastly character"
to life in the upcoming World of WearableArt Awards Show, which opens in Wellington next week.

Flight of the Conchords alumni Jemaine Clement has lent his voice to a yet-to-be-revealed creature built by Weta Workshop.

While the details of this latest voice role won't be disclosed until the big event, a behind-the-scenes teaser trailer released by WOW organisers gave away a few hints.

The annual World of WearableArt show combines fashion and art with dance, music and lighting.

Weta Workshop chief executive and co-founder Sir Richard Taylor said the creature Clement had voiced will act as a "
furry centrepiece for the stage."


The Wellingtonian's international credits include voicing one of the main characters in Minions, alongside comedy heavyweight Steve Carell, Boris the Animal in Men in Black III and Vladislav the vampire in Taika Waititi's What We Do in the Shadows.

WOW artistic director Mike Mizrahi, the driving force behind getting Clement on board, said he knew the Kiwi star's versatile voice would be an ideal fit for the role.

Jemaine is a great comedic talent with an incredibly sexy voice, perfect for our creature.

This beast acts as a dangerous, but impish link through the show and he brings him to life beautifully. We could not have asked for a better match."


The Clement-WOW-Weta partnership also marks the first time Weta Workshop has had a hand in the actual show, rather than just serving as a sponsor.

In the past, the company has sponsored the Costume and Film section as well as offering one winning designer an internship with them each year.

Taylor said it was an incredible honour to be able to further the Weta's involvement in the three-week fashion event.

We've given it our all to create something that is a little bit special for this year's WOW show as, for the very first time, our support will extend into the show itself."


On average WOW attracts entries from designers from over 40 countries, and showcases the finalists in what has become New Zealand's largest single theatrical show.

The show employs more than 350 cast and crew and will play to an audience of 58,000 over its three-week Wellington season.

Chief executive Gisella Carr said the event's continued popularity came down the fact that each year was "
excitingly different from the one before"

The 2016 show starts next week and runs from Thursday 22 September to Sunday 9 October.

While the outfits are the stars, they're complemented by a full-on show - part theatre, part dance - regarded as the most technically demanding in New Zealand. Where else will you see a giant animatronic tiger - courtesy of Weta Workshops and voiced by Flight of the Conchords Jemaine Clement - as a narrator who waxes lyrical about whether poet William Blake had the wording in The Tyger right?

Actually the tiger was a little distracting, but a necessary one.

I met/worked with one half of Flight of the Conchords today. Jemaine Clement came into the studio to do some voiceover work for a project and I totally fanboyed him. But it was so cool to meet someone whose body of work and brand of comedy I admire so much.
