Flight of the Conchords at The Ryman 4/10/09

Damn The Ryman's confounded early start times. For fear of showing up late, we jogged through the Saturday-evening drizzle down 5th Avenue, scarfing the last bit of our Rodeo Cheeseburger in order to make it in time for Flight of the Conchords. We were, of course, just being paranoid, because we entered the fabled venue with enough spare time to join the snaking beer line before finding our seats. After unintentionally overhearing a painfully intimate story from the girl behind us, we snagged a frosty, 11-dollar 24-ounce and hustled into the auditorium. It was finally business time.

We thought we heard a familiar voice from the lobby, and our suspicions were confirmed when we seated ourselves in the balcony: The opening comic was Kristen Schaal, known better to Flight of the Conchords fans as Mel, the obsessive FOTC groupie from the series. Clearly a tinge more self-aware than her alter ego, Schaal utilized a handful of absurdist playlets and her bizarre (but strangely compelling) persona to elicit a genuinely powerful response.

Clad in robot apparati, the Conchords opened with the instant club classic "
Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor"
while bathed in the reflection of the Ryman's disco ball. (Or did they bring their own?) They proceeded to play the bulk of their set on acoustic-electric guitars, and it pretty quickly dawned on us that the vast majority of their material is lascivious pseudo-funk: numbers about layin' a woman down and whatnot sung in a ridiculous but consistently entertaining falsetto.

We'd hoped to hear "
Bowie,"
one of our favorite FOTC jams, and while it was absent from their set, standards like "
If That's What You're Into"
and "
Business Time"
made the cut. Bret and Jemaine preemptively apologized to any music critics in the house for their sub-par chops, but they were actually at least passable at a handful of instruments (drums, Omnichord, guitar, keys and glockenspiel), and most mistakes were pretty endearing.

Perhaps the most obnoxious occurrence of the evening was the increasingly unruly crowd, who shouted "
Freebird!"
about four too many times, went berserk when Bret made mention of East Nashville and constantly hollered lines they recollected from the Flight of the Conchords series. You'd think living amongst the country strain of celebutards would desensitize Nashvillians to becoming severely starstruck, but a lot of folks seemed thrilled simply to be in the presence of people they seen on the tee-vee. Regardless, the Conchords battled back with some pretty hilarious faux Southern accents, and it's nice to see that New Zealand's fourth most popular folk-novelty duo has transcended obscurity far more than they'd ever let on.

And there are 2 photo galleries - FOTC and Kristen. My hands will fall off if I post them all but here's a sampling:

Brilliant and effortless comedy

Flight of the Conchords
Ryman Auditorium

April 10, 2009[/align:7vdq3wxb]

Story and photos by Kate Seesholtz

Ontheir hit HBO show they are known as "
formerly New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo accapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo,"
but in real life The Flight of the Conchords sell out shows across the nation. Friday night at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville was no different as the group, composed of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, played to a full capacity crowd.

Comedian Kristen Shaal (who plays the band's only fan on the show) opened the evening. She covered all the bases, from politics to babies to life on tour. She said she wasn't sure what to expect about living on a tour bus, so she watched Bret Michael's Rock of Love Bus. She commented that she fearful of how many times they would have to pull over and mud wrestle (the answer was twice, by the way). Shaal was the perfect warm up for the evening, telling hilarious stories of her love life through the use of pots and pans (use your imagination) and the negative side effects of marijuana (in the form of a high school play).

The Flight of the Conchords took to the stage dressed as robots (a reoccurring theme in their show), which garnered huge applause from the crowd. They opened with "
Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor"
and their wildly popular "
Most Beautiful Girl in the Room"
("
You're so beautiful. You could be a part time model, but you'd probably still have to keep your normal job."
)

Their between song bantering was just as entertaining as their music. Joking about everything from 'band practice' to the stagehands, it was difficult to tell where their characters ended and they began. They continually spoke of their lack of preparedness, saying that they were "
a bad covers band of themselves."
The truth is that they were hilarious, their songs ranged from the (almost) romantic ("
If You're Into It"
) to the completely outlandish ("
I Told You I was Freekie"
). With lyrics like "
too many mutha uckas, uckin' with my shi,"
it was hard to not laugh when Bret took to the drums to perform "
Mutha'uckers"
(on the show the guys don't ever actually swear).

The Flight of the Conchords offered connected with everyone in the crowd. The ladies went wild for the song "
Sugarlumps."
With lyrics that include "
I see you girls checkin' out my junk, then checkin' out my rump, then back to my sugarlumps,"
Bret and Jemaine quickly gained a small circle of fans anxious to touch them and a standing ovation. For the audience members concerned with the issues of the world, Bret and Jemaine offered up "
Think About It,"
singing: "
Why are we still paying so much for sneakers when you got little kid slaves making them? What are your overheads?"
They told the audience, "
Basically anything that Bono's into, we are."

After the end of their set, and their second standing ovation, Bret and Jemaine returned to close out the evening with "
Angels."
At this they received their third and final standing ovation, a much-deserved response to their brilliant and effortless comedy.

It's been 6 days since THE day, but I'm hanging in there! Still in a bit of a Conchord haze though. Reading and viewing everyone else's show stories is both exhilarating and torturous at the same time!

Every time I read an account of a subsequent show, it makes me sad that my time has come and gone---and so early in the tour! Maybe next time, they can end on the East Coast--or would just make the anticipation last so long that the let down would just be intolerable? Heck, I don't know! (Perhaps they would incur better weather, anyway! ;
))

I'm thinking of banning myself from reading all reports from other shows. :Smile
