At some point in the last year or so, the New Zealand duo Flight of the Conchords crossed over, making the transition from cult fave to mainstream phenom.

Perhaps it was the first season of their eponymous half-hour HBO series (or even more importantly, its “first season” release on DVD). Or maybe that mass-injection system extraordinaire, YouTube, made the difference. (Ranked in order of viewing, band performances commonly boast 1 million to 8 million views.)

Of course, the 2008 Grammy for Best Comedy Album certainly didn't hurt, either.

In hindsight, their arrival to just a drop past the tipping point of fame seems inevitable. Comfortably cult almost since their initial stirrings in 1998, Conchordians Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie have been growing like some Kiwi-shaped, expanding thing ever since — with lauded performances at venues such as the Edinburgh Fringe and Melbourne Comedy festivals;
an appearance on the HBO comedy showcase One Night Stand in 2005;
a much-praised six-part radio series for BBC Radio 2;
and their HBO return in Flight of the Conchords..

And now you're in luck because Flight of the Conchords have just launched a North American tour with Nashville on the schedule. After three dates in Florida, New Zealand’s self-billed “fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo” come to the hallowed ground of the Ryman Auditorium on Friday. Well, maybe you’re not in luck.

Yes, Flight of the Conchords are coming to the Ryman. But unless you're one of the lucky people who successfully navigated Ticketmaster’s arcane ticketing system during the 15 minutes it took to sell out, or one of the less fortunate who had to buy from all those scalpers with plenty of tickets up for sale minutes after, you’re probably not going.

That means Jemaine and Brett are coming, and you aren't going to see them. Still, there are ample opportunities to explore their act — YouTube, HBO and iTunes will still be there. But why should you even go to the trouble of checking them out?

Sure, there’s the obvious. There are the opportunities for personal growth inherent in Clement and McKenzie’s deft musical homages. Be it a newfound appreciation for Gainsbourg-flavored Scopitone (“Foux de fa fa”), 1980's David Bowie (“Bowie”), or just the past-due threat of robots (“Robots/Humans are Dead”), the laughs all come with lessons.

More importantly, in an age where the kingdom of musical parody is still ruled by Weird Al Yankovic (YouTube views of “White and Nerdy” are north of 47 million), there is a need for, if not a changing of the guard, at least a sharing of the load. No novelty musician should have to go it alone.

And for all those parents and grandparents who are tempted to consider Flight of the Conchords too different to digest, hearken back to the thrilling days of the 1960s when another comedy duo with folk beginnings and a large dose of deadpan proved relevant — the Smothers Brothers.

The Conchords may not be as controversial, but one never knows when a rugby or cricket match between New Zealand and Australia may take a nasty turn.

So before you dismiss Flight of the Conchords as the Rick Dees or Tenacious D of the moment, stop and reconsider. Do it for Weird Al Yankovic. Do it for Dick and Tommy Smothers. Do it for New Zealand.

I'm sure you'll have a great time regardless. Look on the bright side, The Ryman is, I believe, the smallest venue they're playing on this tour. So if you have to be stuck in the back you picked the right place. ;
