I think I'm the only person who's really not happy with this. The Maxim shoot made me cringe, but now Playboy?? I'm really really disappointed to see they're giving their business to such trashy misogynist franchises. I mean, I know they're not feminism activists or anything, but still. . . thumbs down on this one, Conchords, BIG thumbs down. Sad

Although I can understand your point, I don't have a problem with them appearing in Maxim or Playboy. Their involvement is an endorsement of the magazines, but I find it difficult to believe that their presence in either magazine is going to make life more difficult for women.

ADD: I'd feel differently if they said something sexist in an interview ... regardless of the medium.

Chloe, you're not the only one...as soon as I saw this thread, I cringed. I wasn't upset about Maxim (just embarrassed buying it), but Playboy is uhhhh...trashy. Blah

ADD: That said, I always look forward to more Conchords articles/interviews. Razz

I'll just have to make myself forget the source. haha, wouldn't it be nice if they let you buy JUST the article? That would never happen though because then guys wouldn't get to use "that" excuse ("What? I buy it for the articles!").

I'm not implying that their presence in the magazine will make life more difficult for women, what I mean is that the appearing in it endorses it and helps substantiate an already toxic portion of our culture. Plus, it makes me sad that people who may never have heard of them before and see that interview will now associate them with companies like Playboy.

And maybe this isn't a fair question, but (and this goes for the whole board in general) hypothetically speaking if say, the Ku Klux Klan or some other racist group had their own magazine and the Conchords appeared in it, would you still feel the same?

But I don't think you have to be sexist to read Playboy. It's extremely unlikely that anyone who isn't racist would be reading the Ku Klux Klan Newsletter. A more realistic comparison might be, say, Howard Stern's radio show--which is both racist and sexist. But you don't need to be either to listen to (and enjoy) it.

I just don't get outraged about anything unless I see that there's a demonstrable (preferably repeatable) cause-and-effect connection. I don't believe that the Conchords' appearance in Playboy is going to bring about the reversal of Roe vs. Wade. But if anyone can demonstrate otherwise, I'm open to changing my opinion.

ADD: I feel the same way about all "-ism" issues.

Um. .. I disagree with this completely utterly and absolutely.

But that's a rant for another day. I don't think the guys doing an interview with Playboy is going to "bring about the collapse of Roe vs. Wade" or something silly like that, and I don't think they're sexist or that them doing an interview with Playboy is an act of sexism on their part, I'm just very disappointed that they seem to be choosing to gladhand with the more toxic aspects of this culture and now they're going to be affiliated with that for doing so. Sad

I don't really have any issues with them being in Playboy (although, yes, Playgirl would have been preferable), other than an initial "eww" reaction. I think they are just getting publicity where they can -- which is probably coming more so from HBO. I'm sure they aren't regular subscribers to Bust either.

That being said, I probably won't buy the magazine unless the article and pictures are AMAZING. I'll have to rely on you lovely folks to scan the article.

After doing a little perusing of the Playboy website, I'm more excited about this interview. The interview that is posted on the site right now, with Hugh Laurie, is very long and interesting.

If the interview is long and covers things we haven't read before, I don't care where it comes from. Although seeing as I was embarrassed buying Maxim last year, I don't think I will purchase this one.

Also, while the Playboy franchise and the lifestyle it promotes may be misogynistic, I think that the articles and interviews are sort of a separate entity. Just last year the magazine interviewed Fareed Zakaria, Tina Fey, and Steve Carell, all awesome people, and probably not misogynists. I would be more upset if I found out that one of the guys had attended a party at the Playboy mansion or something.

Feh. . the magazine's most likely doing all these interesting interviews in an attempt to divert attention away from the fact that it's a sexist pile of trash. Oh well. I'll read the interview if it's posted here and see if it is deep and interesting but I will not be buying the magazine and giving them my business.
