[size=100:rpqksh6h]Universal Pictures got a nice surprise this weekend as its new animated comedy Despicable Me surpassed all expectations by opening in first place with an estimated $60.1 million from 3,476 theaters, an average of $17,295. The movie is the first film from Chris Meledandri's Illumination Entertainment and was directed by Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin. Despicable Me, made for about $69 million, features the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Danny McBride, Miranda Cosgrove, Jack McBrayer, Mindy Kaling, Jemaine Clement and Julie Andrews.

Universal City, CA, United States (AHN) - “Despicable Me” is hitting the stores just in time to make into everyone’s stockings. The hilarious and heartfelt tale will arrive in stores on December 14 just in time for the holidays.

The animated sensation raked in $250 million at the box office and features the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Miranda Cosgrove, Julie Andrews, Russell Brand, Kristen wig, Will Arnett, Danny McBride, Jack BcBrayer and Jemaine Clement.

“Despicable Me is one of those rare titles that moviegoers of all ages have enthusiastically embraced,” said Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. “It’s not only one of the highest-grossing movies of the year but also one of the most popular animated films of all time. Perfectly timed for the holidays, Despicable Me will be high on everybody's wish list as the must-have Blu-ray/DVD of the season.”

For a limited time, fans can also catch a trio of funny and mischievous Minions, available in the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D combo packs and in the DVD Double Pack.

The bonus features also include Miss Hattie’s Top Secret Cookie Recipes and “Gru-Control” which allows fans to catch all of the behind-the-scenes footage and cast interviews.

in the computer animated film, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.

The film, slated to be released in 2014, follows the goggle-clad henchmen to the super villain Gru in "
Despicable Me"
as they interact with human characters in an original story.

Many of the same filmmakers from the original movie are on board. "
Despicable Me"
director Pierre Coffin is teaming up with layout supervisor Kyle Balda. The script was already written by Brian Lynch, who wrote the film adaptation of the popular computer game "
The Sims."


Production is being timed with the schedule of "
Despicable 2,"
the original film's forthcoming sequel, so the as-yet-untitled minions film comes out a year later.
