In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon. (Yes, the moon!) Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.

Despicable Me,"
a 3-D CG-animated film that has Steve Carell voicing the title character.

Jason Segel, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Danny McBride, Russell Brand, Jemaine Clement ("
Flight of the Conchords"
), Jack McBrayer ("
30 Rock"
) and Julie Andrews are providing the other lead voices. The film will be released in 2010.

Carell's title character is a deplorable man known as Groo who masterminds the mother of all heists when he plots to steal the moon. Egged on by an evil mother (Andrews), Groo finds one obstacle in his way: a trio of orphan girls who temporarily come under his care and won't leave.

Meledandri said the spirit of the film came partly from taking his sons to see family films and discovering they always most loved the villains.

[size=100:cgligbnl]Earlier today I posted a complete listing of all the major 3D movie releases being developed for the next 4 years. One of the films was Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me, a computer animated film about a trio of orphan girls cause the normally deplorable Groo to rethink his plan to steal the moon.

I like the stylized character design. The voice cast line-up is pretty nice, with a handful of Judd Apatow regulars with a couple nice surprises: Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Danny McBride, Jemaine Clement, Miranda Cosgrove and Julie Andrews. However, I’m not that impressed with the plot of the film, an unfortunately the two and a half minute trailer doesn’t even really show the film’s despicable main character Groo.
