IT WAS BUSINESS TIME AFTER ALL
27 October 2008
Bret McKenzie would probably have been pleased with fourth, but his father’s horse Conchord was far too good for that at Trentham, Wellington, on Sunday.
Peter McKenzie said today he hadn’t had time yet to tell Bret, one half of the USA-based self-styled "
fourth most popular folk-parody duo"
Flight Of The Conchords, about the galloper’s winning debut. But he was sure Bret would be pleased.
Conchord is owned by Peter McKenzie but is considered a family horse.
"
I was going to register it in all the boys’ names, but there wasn’t time to get the signatures together as I had to rush to get it nominated for yesterday’s race,"
he told NZPA today.
Conchord was originally going to be called Business Time, after Bret and colleague Jemaine Clement’s hit song of the same name, a move that embarrassed Bret.
"
He said `it sounds a bit over the top doing that sort of thing, Dad’, but I said if we don’t someone else we will."
As it was, someone else had. It’s Business Time was already taken by a syndicate from the John Sargent stable and the name Flightoftheconcord (crct) was registered to the John and Stephen Ralph stable.
"
So I called it Conchord,"
Peter McKenzie said.
Despite a heavy track, Conchord was too good for a novice field over 1600m, winning by almost five lengths after leading all the way for jockey Sam Spratt.
Peter McKenzie expects more in store. "
He’s a very relaxed horse with a high cruising speed."
Coincidentally, Flightoftheconcord lined up two races later, finishing one place worse than fourth.
Peter McKenzie said he would probably line up Conchord in a special maiden race at the Levin Classic on November 28.
His son might find something lyrical in that.

Why do I find it so incredibly cute that he calls his Dad, 'Dad'? It's so normal.. and like what would I be thinking he'd call him if he didn't call him Dad?
Augh, I have serious problems....

Sin, this one might lend itself better to your fantasy:
Although, she wouldn't be her and Bret would be having a good time, of course. ;

Perhaps the ride of his life? bwahaha...
