[size=133:1rz2uaol]Fantastic Fest Round-Up[size=100:1rz2uaol]
An overview of the coolest film festival in the world.

by Chris Tilly, IGN UK

[size=100:1rz2uaol]UK, October 12, 2009 - With the dust now settled from Fantastic Fest 2009, we thought it would be a good time to look back on what was a monumentally mad week of film.

A festival unlike any other, FF is a celebration of all things truly fantastic, with the biggest that Hollywood has to offer rubbing shoulders with tiny productions from the far-flung reaches of the globe.

Horror, comedy, action and anime all screen at Austin's legendary Alamo Drafthouse, while the evenings are filled with ridiculous events like the Fantastic Feud, the Fantastic Debates, and IGN's favourite - the 100 Best Kills, in which death after death batters the audience into bloody submission.

[size=75:1rz2uaol]Jemaine Clement, on scene-stealing form in Gentlemen Broncos.

[size=133:1rz2uaol]Proceedings kicked off with the world premiere of Gentlemen Broncos, an intermittently funny film from Napoleon Dynamite helmer Jared Hess. We've already reviewed Gentlemen Broncos but, for a truncated version, just know that the film is brilliant whenever Jemaine Clement's Dr. Ronald Chevalier is on screen, and dull when he isn't.

His was perhaps the finest performance of the fest
, although James Purefoy ran him close with his brilliant work in Solomon Kane, Michael J. Bassett's bloody interpretation of the Robert E. Howard character which we reviewed here.

Elsewhere Tom Hardy caused a stir with his committed portrayal of Britain's most dangerous prisoner, Bronson, John C. Reilly won over the largely teenage audience who showed up to see him play the vampire in The Vampire's Assistant, and Woody Harrelson surprised everyone by turning in a career-best performance in Zombieland.

Meanwhile, Chile's Marko Zaror - aka The Latin Dragon - was the undoubted star of the festival's action strand, his hugely charismatic performance as the high-kicking secret agent with a heart of gold in Mandrill bagging him one of the festival's best actor awards. Look out for this guy as he's going to be MASSIVE.

On the horror front, George A Romero's Survival of the Dead made little impact, Paranormal Activity was loved by all and sundry, and Trick 'r Treat continued to pick up festival plaudits, making Warner Bros' decision to release it straight-to-DVD all the more baffling.

Brit-flick The Children was also well-liked, as was Ti West's The House of the Devil, a throwback to the low-budget but deadly serious horror flicks that played on TV in the early 1980s. And if you were looking for comedy-horror, you could do a lot worse than Doghouse, Jake West's bloody battle of the sexes that features a horde of bloodthirsty zombirds.

On the horror sequel front, REC 2 seemed to divide the audience, with some loving the direction in which the directors took the story, and others hating it, particularly the film's final five minutes. Happily, IGN fell into the former camp, as our REC 2 review demonstrates.

There were some interesting entries in the festival's more avant-garde Fantastic strand, with Kamogawa Horumo IGN's particular favourite. To describe the unexpected madness of this Japanese effort seems like a crime however, so our advice is to catch a screening when and where you can, before the inevitable Disney remake.

K-20: The Fiend with 20 Faces was another Japanese winner, a superb superhero movie set in an alternate past in which WWII never happened, and telling the tale of a circus performer-turned crime fighter pursuing a dastardly master of disguise. Thrilling, funny, beautifully acted and shot, this one deserves to be a global hit, and also seems ripe for the remake treatment.

South Korea also got in on the act with Private Eye, a ridiculously entertaining detective flick set at the turn of the 20th century and playing like an eastern take on Sherlock Holmes.

Things got weirder with the truffle-accompanied screening of Truffe, perhaps the most visually arresting film of the fest, and certainly the most peculiar. Revolving around a champion truffle miner, a sinister furrier, and an army of men with refrigerators strapped to their backs, it really does have to be seen to be believed.

The same goes for A Town Called Panic, a bonkers Belgian stop-animation flick about a co-habiting cowboy, Indian and horse trying to deal with the fall-out of a birthday prank gone wrong and 50m bricks being piled on the roof of their house.

Other films that fell into the bizarre category include Crazy Racer, a Guy Ritchie-inspired tale of crime, cross and double-cross, set against the backdrop of competitive cycling in China, and Fish Story, the tall tale of a 1975 punk song with the potential to save the world.

Fantastic Fest is also known for its 'Secret Screenings', and 2009 was no different, with five films playing unexpectedly. They included The Men Who Stare at Goats and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, although the surprise flick that caused the most commotion was Universal Soldier: A New Beginning.

That was mainly because fan favourite Dolph Lundgren - looking younger than his 51-years - was on-hand to introduce and crack a few Rocky IV-inspired jokes. Unfortunately, even though the film sees him re-team with fellow UniSol alumni Jean-Claude Van Damme, it's all a little dull and pointless, and not a patch on the original. Still, if you want to find out more, our Universal Soldier: A New Beginning review is here.

Of the week's disappointments, Ninja Assassin was perhaps the biggest. Produced by the Wachowski brothers and Joel Silver, it should have been the action event of the festival. Unfortunately, some ropey acting, a predictable plot, and fight-after-fight failing to set the screen alight meant it was all a little underwhelming.

Assassin was far from the worst film playing however, with that honour undoubtedly going to Rampage, Uwe Boll's morally bankrupt tale of a youngster going on a killing spree. Dumb and dangerous in equal measure, the less said about it the better.

Fantastic Festers also got a sneak peak at James Cameron's Avatar, with producer Jon Landau flying in to introduce the clips and answer audience questions.
Unfortunately, the new material failed to set pulses racing, with the jury still very much out on this one.

Then all of a sudden it was Closing Night, although the Spierig brothers Daybreakers was a fitting finale flick. Set in a near-future when vampires are the dominant race and humans all-but-extinct, the film stars Ethan Hawke, Sam Neill and Willem Dafoe, and had the audience in raptures with its stylish visuals, compelling storyline and original take on the vampire myth.

And, with that, Fantastic Fest was done. All-in-all it was a terrific week of film;
celluloid heaven for geeks like us. Thanks to Tim and Karrie League and the rest of the Drafthouse team for making our trip so memorable, and roll on FF 2010!

I purposely left the article at its full length because it makes the statement about Jemaine that much more impressive. ;
) As in, the reviewer saw pretty much everything, yet thought Jemaine's performance was possibly the best.

I'm trying to be non-bias but his performance was definitely one of my favorites... maybe a tie with Woody's in Zombieland.

(EDIT: I don't think that came out right. Jemaine was no doubt my favorite performance of the weekend because he's so talented and I love him to bits. But my love might be making me overlook Woody's steller performance too. So those two were maybe equally my favorite when love isn't involved. <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/>)

But woah, that guy saw many of the main events and thought Jem's was one of the best out of the bunch. [image]

WHAT? I would have DIED if we had somehow gotten to see that.

And I remember seeing posters for this, but now after reading about it, I'm intrigued! I wouldn't be surprised if some friends and I saw this in theaters. [image]

Also, Paranormal Activity (which was at FF) this weekend possibly for me! [image] [size=75:soior367](Hopefully I won't regret it! *bites nails*)

Erm, anyway:

I know. <img src=" title="Surprised" border="0"/>

I wish we could have seen A Town Called Panic. I didn't realize that there was a showing Friday night, which is when we had all that time to kill between Zombieland and the karaoke party. Anyway, it was that Belgian claymation one, and evidently ended up being one of the most highly-rated films at FF.

Good luck at Paranormal Activity! [image]

(I'd like to apologize, I should have watched and posted this like two weeks ago. But I just remembered to watch this, and this sh-t just gets me angry.)

Are you f-cking kidding me? The picture with them is SO horrible!! (With the interviewer its a little bit better) It's too bright and a shade of yellow. The audio sucks too, which they shouldn't have an excuse for since the mics are by their shirts. And what the f-ck is with them showing half the trailer DURING the interview? It makes sense to do that when they are talking about the movie... for about 5 seconds top, I say. NOT to the point when she starts asking a different question and they start answering and but you are too freaking distracted because they are playing the trailer on top of the interview! Who the hell made this?

I think my hidden T is having a moment. [size=75:isejy57j](Erm, is that right?)

I didn't notice that, but I might have been too distracted by the video poorness.

I left a negative comment (which I never do):
On a technical level, this
video is pretty horrible. And it IS "

. Who works at this place?

LOL INTERNETZ. <img src=" title="Razz" border="0"/> Then they might check my profile and see that all I have is a few cruddy FotC concert videos and be like "

Since it was instituted just five minutes ago, readers have eagerly looked forward to the regular Trailerspotting section on the Screenwriter blog. This week we’ll be considering the promo for Gentlemen Broncos by singular Mormon prankster Jared Hess. Here it is in all its unusual glory:

Now, Mr Hess does divide people. Napoleon Dynamite, his debut, has a great many fans, but some grumpy old sod-heads felt that it dallied a little too long in the country we call Quirkyland. That film’s even odder follow-up, Nacho Libre, starring Jack Black as a Mexican wrestler, attracted no such controversy;
that is to say virtually everybody hated it. Given that I laughed so hard I gave myself an aneurism, I suppose I must regard it as the second-most underrated film of the decade (after, maybe, Strange Wilderness).

On the evidence of the trailer, Gentlemen Broncos offers no concessions whatsoever to those who think Hess too quirked-out by half. After all, it begins with a long-haired man shouldering a snake and goes on to take in surveillance-does and transsexual space-jockeys.

There are, however, plenty of reasons to be optimistic. For starters, the film features the mighty mass of funny that is Jennifer Coolidge. I would happily watch anything, even an Oliver Stone film, if it included just the tiniest cameo by Ms C. Also, the trailer takes in In the Year 2525 (Exordium and Terminus) by ersatz hippies Zager and Evans and, equally thrillingly, footage of Sam Rockwell in a silly wig. [size=133:3sc7amdv]The really intriguing performance here though comes from Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement as a hugely pompous fantasy novelist named Ronald Chevalier. It’s very funny, but I do find my mind wandering towards thoughts of a hugely pompous horror writer named Garth Marenghi. I wonder if Matthew Holness, who played the fictional “dreamweaver” on Channel 4, is fuming in his lair. Hmmm…

[size=133:kviejl7j]Gentlemen Broncos mixes sci-fi, salty gnats in new film

By David Rodriguez Assistant Editor

Published: Friday, October 16, 2009
Updated: Friday, October 16, 2009
[size=100:kviejl7j]
GENTLEMEN BRONCOS — (From left to right) Jared Hess, Michael Angarano, Sam Rockwell, Mike White, Jerusha Hess and Dr. Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement) answer questions at the premier at the Paramount Theater in downtown Austin on Sept. 24, 2009.

What do a flesh pocket, a defecating snake, and rocket equipped stags have in common? They are all contained in the hilariously campy, science fiction infused, teenage angst film “Gentlemen Broncos.”

“Gentlemen Broncos” is the most recent comedic endeavor from couple and creative duo Jared and Jerusha Hess. The Hess’s co-wrote “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre.” Jared directed both “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Gentlemen Broncos,” with the latter taking on an even more exaggerated, middle-America quirky feel that is indicative of his Utah roots.

The movie is centered on an odd and reserved budding sci-fi writer, Benjamin Purvis (Michael Angarano, Lords of Dogtown), who attends Cletus Festival to hone his craft. The camp’s key-note and only speaker is the renowned Dr. Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement, Flight of the Conchords). Chevalier is a highly celebrated fantasy author who happens to be experiencing writer’s block, which leads him to plagiarize Purvis’ story “Yeast Lords: The Bronco Years.” Chevalier’s plagiarism coincides with Purvis’ story’s success at home when a local hack director buys and then begins to film an out-of-control adaptation of “Yeast Lords…” careening Purvis’ once simple, nightgown peddling, geodesic dome dwelling life into a whirlwind of revelation and camp.

The film is presented in a uniquely triangular format of Purvis’ vision of his story containing the Kansas-esque, hickish, bearded tough guy Bronco (Sam Rockwell, Moon). Juxtaposed with Chevalier’s effeminate version, which he aptly renamed The Chronicles of Brutus and Balzaak. Brutus (also played by Rockwell) in Chevalier’s version has also raided one of Kansas’ singer’s closets and talks with a lisp, all while doing battle with cyclopes. The real life drama to complete the triumvirate is Purvis’ wrangling with the slaughtering of his story by the hometown director Lonnie (Hector Jimenez).

The film is hilarious. Testicles have never been so fascinating. Rockwell’s dual performance is unforgettable and producer Mike White’s (co-writer of School of Rock) performance as Lonnie’s sleazy producer, Dusty, is a telling addition.

Following its September 24 Fantastic Fest premiere, the Accent sat down with Rockwell and White to talk about Brutus/Balzaak, the director and salty gnats.

According to White, Mr. Hess originally wanted both Brutus and Balzaak to be played by two separate actors, but when Rockwell agreed to come on board that changed.

Rockwell: “I think I kind of talked him into it. I think I pitched the idea?”

With Moon and now Gentlemen Broncos, Rockwell has showcased the juxtaposition of a slightly homosexual and hilarious individual versus a redneckish and caustic character with the latter. An egotistical mislead hero with a dying and skeptical proletariat with the former.

The actor has an affinity for the dichotomy. “I get comedy…and there seems to always be a little comedy in the drama and drama in the comedy.” Rockwell states that his heroes were Robert DeNiro and Bill Murray, Robert Duvall and Richard Pryor.

Rockwell: “It is very liberating to just go over the top…not worry about being realistic or anything, in both worlds. Bronco was kind of maybe a little bit of the character in “The Green Mile” that I did...the looks were modeled from guys in the band Kansas, both looks.”

“I actually did this right after Moon, and I was really excited… I thought I was going to do Brutus with an English accent, so I was tapping people who were in London ‘cause I was trying to get a posh British accent. I was going to do like Brando in “Dry White Season;
” I was trying that voice for a while. I actually thought this was going to be really easy, and when we were in front of the camera, it was easy, it was just effortless ‘cause Jared was easy to work with. But I didn’t realize all the makeup and the gnats…the conditions were crazy, we were out in the Salt Lake…you’re itching, and you got this crazy suit…I couldn’t …take a piss you know…there was no fly on this thing. I had no idea…schedule for three weeks.”

According to White filming in the Salt Lake was more than a vicarious experience, it forced an exodus of sorts. “I had never really dealt with bugs like that before. It smelled like eggs, sulfur in the air. So I went the first day, I was like ‘I got to go. I have a lot of stuff going on back in L.A., Jared? I’ll see you guys.’ And I literally didn’t come back until the last day.” Rockwell exclaimed, “We had those like bee-hive masks so bugs can’t get in your face. It was insane. We had like zipper suits on.” Rockwell: “If it wasn’t for Jared, it would have been a nightmare, but Jared is such a lovely guy.”

According to the actor, shooting the movie was unlike anything he had ever done before.

Bronco versus Balzaak is genius camp. Both were way over the top. White put it best as he said “It was cool. I mean, I love how they’re on the two poles of the masculinity spectrum.” With a sheepish laugh he looked down, his face covered by an oversized red truckers hat with the words YEAST LORDS emblazoned across it. Rockwell’s attraction to sci-fi camp could stem from his character in “Galaxy Quest” or his love for the genre. He has worked with, arguably, the most prolific sci-fi director in American history in Ridley Scott (Blade Runner), but the film Rockwell did with Scott was about present day hustlers instead of deadly androids or aliens. “I almost did “G.I. Jane” with Ridley, and then I didn’t. I sort of dropped out of it, so I thought he was never going to hire me again. But then he did, and I was really excited. “Matchstick Men” was really fun ‘cause it was just a couple of actors. There was no special effects or broadswords or gladiators. So, I think Ridley was in a good mood, you know, he didn’t really have to deal with a lot. It was just like an acting piece. So that was a small movie for him, but it was a big movie for me. A lot of the set design on Moon was an homage to Ridley’s stuff in Blade Runner [and Alien].”

What is on the horizon for White and his apparently cooperative yet eclectic mind? “I am going to direct a pilot for HBO with Laura Dern (“Inland Empire”), we’re shooting I think…at the end of the year. I wrote it. It’s like a half-hour show. It’s kind of about… this woman that Laura is playing…she has a nervous breakdown…she has to go away to get help. She comes back… enlightened, she thinks she’s found the answers to life…she goes back to her work and her life, and she’s gonna’ change the world. It’s called “Enlightened,” it’s pretty weird. HBO’s into it…so far it’s been pretty smooth.”

While White has been collaborating with the best station on television, Rockwell is working on the next Marvel potential blockbuster: “Iron Man 2.” “It’s like Iron Man, and more, a little more fighting…more characters. There is a new superhero that Scarlett (Johannson as the Black Widow) does. Rourke (Whiplash) is…a great addition to it, and Cheadle (War Machine)…there is a lot going on…it was a complicated piece to put together. I’m playing Justin Hammer. I’m the fast talking weapons dealer. Downey (Iron Man) is gonna be amazing in this one.”

“Gentlemen Broncos” will hit limited theatres Oct. 30.

[size=133:t236otty]7 Questions with Jared and Jerusha Hess

[size=100:t236otty]While in film school at Brigham Young University, Jared and Jerusha Hess wrote a screenplay and recruited their friends -- including a then-unknown actor named Jon Heder -- to help turn it into what would become one of the most successful movies of 2004, Napoleon Dynamite. Since then they've come out with two more films: 2006's Nacho Libre (starring Jack Black), and Gentlemen Broncos, which will be released October 30.

Napoleon Dynamite gained its cult classic status by following an awkward misfit in rural Idaho, and Gentlemen Broncos isn't so different. The protagonist Benjamin Purvis (Michael Angarano) is a 17-year-old aspiring sci-fi writer who spends much more time in his own head than hanging out with his peers. He nervously submits his masterpiece Yeast Lords to a fantasy writing competition judged by his idol Ronald Chevalier (hilariously portrayed by Jemaine Clement), and is enraged when Chevalier changes a few names and publishes the story under his own name. And as demonstrated by the bizarre fantasy sequences used to portray Yeast Lords, the two writers have a very different interpretation of the story.

We sat down with the husband and wife duo to talk about Gentlemen Broncos, rural America and "
cloning humor."

Zimbio: Who's funniest offscreen: Jon Heder, Jack Black or Jemaine Clement?
Jerusha Hess: Jack Black. Jemaine is very reserved, and Jon Heder is not funny. I'm just being honest.
Jared Hess: Jemaine and Jon turn it off and can turn it on onscreen, but Jack, he's kind of like, all the time, a little firecracker.

Zimbio: Napoleon Dynamite was your first movie, and that really blew up (Vote for Pedro T-shirts, etc.) Did you feel a lot of pressure after that one came out to come up with something really spectacular?
Jared: We were more surprised by it all. It being our first film, we never anticipated it. We hoped that it would maybe get into a festival or maybe get on a late night cable program or something eventually, that it would lead to other things.
Jerusha: We purposely made a movie that was nothing like Napoleon for our second movie. We didn't want people to go, "
Oh, it's kind of like Napoleon, but not as good."
So we made Nacho.

Zimbio: How did you feel like Nacho Libre stacked up?
Jared: We found that a lot of people who really like Napoleon didn't like Nacho, but Nacho kind of had a new kind of younger...[laughs] I feel like a lot of kids really like that movie. It's a lot more physically funny.
Jerusha: So Gentlemen Broncos went back to our Napoleon roots. We'll see what our Nacho fans think.

Zimbio: You tend toward the more G-rated comedies versus the hardcore sex and violence ones out there. Is that intentional?
Jerusha: This is our first PG-13 movie. Our five-year-old audience is going to be a little disappointed. But our son will definitely watch Gentlemen Broncos. We put all that testicular humor in because we were potty-training our son. It was really on the mind.
Jared: I like to refer to it as "
cloning humor."
I'm worried about what my grandparents and mom and dad are going to think about this film, just because of the body aspects of it.
Jerusha: We do like to make these kind of fun, family, anyone can enjoy these movies. And it's not that we're intentionally going out to say, "
Oh, we gotta make a G movie."
We're a bit tame.

Zimbio: When your mom saw Napoleon Dynamite, she felt like it was a little personal. You tend to draw from your own experiences when you're making films, right?
Jared: [in mom voice] "
That was a lot of embarrassing family material."

Jerusha: She loves it.
Jared: My little brothers especially -- with Napoleon, things that happened in the film were things that happened to them growing up.
Jerusha: I don't know if his brothers have gotten over it still. I think there'a little animosity there.
Jared: Like when my little brother called and was like, "
Jared, is mom there?"
"
No James, she's not."
"
Can you bring me my chapstick? My lips are killing me right now."
It's increasingly becoming more a family affair with each movie. On the DVD commentary for this film it's like, "
And there's Jerusha's uncle Hal in the background clapping, and that person there in the choir is my mom, and there's Aunt Becky."
Yeah.

Zimbio: What's it like working together as a husband and wife team?
Jared: We bring different things to the table and those things change all the time. We write everything together.
Jerusha: By the end of the script we don't know who wrote what. I want to claim all the funny stuff but I doubt I did it.

Zimbio: So everything that's not bathroom humor is Jerusha?
Jerusha: No, I put in a lot of the "
cloning"
jokes.
Jared: Yeah, it was your idea for Bronco to be sewing his loins back together.

Zimbio: One of the things you do best is portraying rural America and the people you see in the Home Depot. How do you get the inspiration to do that?
Jerusha: We just always have our eyes open.
Jared: Yeah, and so much of it's autobiographical too. So much of it is inspired by our immediate family, and actual people, so it becomes easy for us to regurgitate who they are on the page.
Jerusha: Occasionally we'll be somewhere, we were at a Heart concert or maybe the fair, where there was a lot of mullets and it was just fun and cute. We saw some kid walk across and Jared and I both had this amazing moment where we were like, "
That kid has to be in our movie."

Jared: He was the real deal. But living in that part of America, it's what inspires us.
Jerusha: I know we're really on the nose with some of our characters, but we sometimes try to be subtle with it too.
Jared: We realized that all the antagonistic forces in this film wear turtlenecks.

Michael Angarano plays the main character Benjamin in Gentlemen Broncos.
Zimbio: Like cartoon characters. But sometimes the caricatures of rural America seem almost a little bleak. Is that intentional at all?
Jared: Maybe too much of anything is bleak.
Jerusha: I think we wanted to show that here's this single mom [Benjamin's mom, played by Jennifer Coolidge], and she has been single for a long time, and it's kind of gone over the top with the girliness in the house. Without that male influence, I think it is a little depressing. She's just alone in that poor little dome.
Jared: Ready for some lovin'.

Zimbio: Napoleon Dynamite was small-budget because you were in school, but now you have a lot more production money to work with. Has that changed your process at all?
Jared: We've tried not to let it change the process. It's good to be able to pay our crew, which we weren't really able to do on Napoleon. That one was a labor of love all around, it was buddies from film school that came.
Jerusha: Nacho had some stunts, but there were no special effects. But this one had quite a bit of special effects, but I think Jared doesn't like a really involved movie. I think you just like making simpler movies. You don't want to go make Transformers 5 or whatever.
Jared: Yeah, I'm interested in people at the thrift store and my own family.

Zimbio: How did you decide to portray the fantasy portions?
Jared: We thought the idea of different people changing and interpreting this young kid's work was just fun to see.
Jerusha: This is a 17-year-old boy's fantasy, and really, would he be writing such elaborate effects? It's nice to see that it's just a little bit ghetto because it's a young boy's dream.
Jared: His ideas are kind of low-fi.

Zimbio: Does your Mormon faith come into the movie at all?
Jared: Probably in an unconscious way.
Jerusha: Sure. But I think the culture, more so.
Jared: I was a Mormon, Spanish-speaking missionary in Chicago. I was in Cicero. I met a guy on the street and he was like, "
Hey church people, I want to talk to you."
We went over and he was like, "
Why are you called 'elders?' "
You know, that's the title you have as a missionary. I'm like, "
Oh, it's a title...What's your name?"
He said, "
My name is Napoleon Dynamite."
I wrote down his name and I was like, "
Holy cow, first movie title has to be Napoleon Dynamite."
I don't know if he was just messing with us or that was his sweet street name, but I've always wondered if he remembers that day.
