I don't know if this has been posted yet but...
Rhys Darby worked the live comic scene and honed his stand-up abilities — especially his sound effects — in his home country of New Zealand, then hit Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2002 for his first solo show.
He moved to old Blighty and worked comedy clubs like the Comedy Store and Jongleurs before touring countries like Germany, France, Italy, Holland, Iceland, The Falklands and more recently the Middle East.
The Flight Of The Conchords scooped the first ever Kiwi Grammy for The Distant Future in 2007. Last year saw them snatch three positions in the triple j Hottest 100 too, 'Hiphopopotamus Vs Rhymenocerous' (#67), 'The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)' (#60) and 'Business Time' (#19).
Recently, Darby has stepped out of the collective shadow cast by Bret’s scruffy mane and Jemaine’s dreamy eyebrows and become — heavens forbid — a Hollywood actor. He made good use of a fairly, um, shii script in Yes Man opposite Jim Carrey and is currently on the promotion vapour trail, talking up his role in The Boat That Rocked.
Richard Curtis’ latest flick sees Darby sharing screen time with Rhys Ifans, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Nick Frost.
“It was a bunch of guys getting together on a boat learning how to DJ with 1960s equipment… so we were all in the same boat,” he says, without noticing his punchy, slightly pungent pun.
One must wonder how many Water World references were made while shooting at sea?
“We didn’t even think about that really. We were too involved with the decent script we had,” he laughs.
“We all had to come up with our own set-lists and our own links for an hour long set.
My particular DJ is the self confessed King of Comedy. My character was all about the Goon dialogue and using sound effects,” he reveals, before wondering aloud that “the other side of shooting was… did these other actors know who the hell I was? And they did, most of them had seen Flight Of The Conchords and because that’s the only body of work that anybody had seen they had respect for thet so thet was cool,” he says. But not everyone had witnessed the whiteness of Murray Hewitt.
“Phillip Seymour Hoffman didn’t say much to me until Richard Curtis gave him the box-set of the ’Conchords, and he watched four episodes one night and turned up to work the next day with a big smile on his face. We became friends after that. He started quoting stuff that Murray would say.”
What was his Kiwi accent like? “Pretty bad. The whole time I was there they would all take the piss out of my accent, constantly and it became a joke. They’d be getting laughs… and I like getting laughs so I did impressions of them doing impressions of me so we had a lot of fun. Richard Curtis was born in New Zealand, that was my saving grace. I have a good agent so that was how I was able to get a meeting with him, and he hadn’t seen ’Conchords, but his partner had seen it and that swayed him,” Darby says.

Source:[size=150:wz12ey6i]Darby slams 'lazy' critics
4:00AM Sunday May 10, 2009
By Rebecca Milne
[size=100:wz12ey6i]Funnyman Rhys Darby has taken a swipe at Kiwi comedy reviewers for spoiling the punchlines.
The stand-up comedian and actor, who shot to international fame as hapless manager Murray in Flight of the Conchords, criticised "
lazy reviews"
on his Facebook page last week.
"
If you're going to review live comedy shows, make sure you don't give away the jokes word for word in your review! ... amateurs,"
he wrote.
"
Talk about the premise, yes, even the set-ups but don't try and get laughs from the reader by essentially stealing the material."
Darby was upset by reviews of shows in the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, which features almost 90 acts in Auckland and Wellington until May 24.
He said British and US reviewers knew what they were doing, but "
live comedy hasn't been around as long in NZ so we're still getting to grips with how to review it, I guess"
.
His comments were backed by most of the people who responded. Comedian James Nokise, appearing in The Adventures of Jimi Samoa at the festival, said reviews should include a spoiler warning at the top.

Westie comedian Ewen Gilmour told the Herald on Sunday giving away the punchline was like "
telling kids there's no Santa"
.
Speaking from Los Angeles yesterday, Darby was unrepentant, describing offending reviewers as "
lazy"
and "
rude"
for getting laughs by "
plagiarising"
comedians.
"
There is a way to review live comedy and that's not the way. If I don't stand up and say it no one will. Comedians won't say it because they'll end up getting a bad review, or they'll be too scared."
Darby, who starred with Jim Carrey in Yes Man and Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Boat That Rocked, said he no longer relied on stand-up and had to worry less about reviewers.
"
I'm sort of beyond all of that now, so I can stand up. A lot of the comedians jumped on the bandwagon and were quite happy I mentioned that. It's just a polite thing because we need to work together. As comics, we need reviewers and they need us."
Darby isn't appearing at the comedy festival, but produced two shows through the company he runs with wife Rosie Carnahan.
He will appear at the Winter Festival in Queenstown next month after shooting his first movie lead, opposite Sasha Alexander of hit TV show NCIS.
"
It's fabulous,"
quipped Darby, whose stand-up DVD Imagine That is an international bestseller. "
The emphasis is all on me. I'm in most of the scenes."
Darby wondered initially if he could carry the film for two hours, but said it was perfect for him. "
It really showcases all of my skills. I can bring my own play on to the script as well."
He said US cable network HBO had commissioned a third series of Flight of the Conchords. "
We're discussing it right now, in fact, whether the guys want to do another one. One's been ordered but it's up to the boys.
"
They've got another week and a half and they finish their big US tour and then they will probably take a moment to work out whether they want to continue or not. So that's the big question still yet to be answered, I'm afraid."
