I was staying at my friends place the other day, who's fiance is in the NZ Army. He had been away on a training thingamibob and his unit had just been out on a 2 week field excercise, and the night they got back Imagine That was on TV here. He said they all watched it and were cracking up at his description of his time in the army because it was so dead-on accurrate of what it's actually like.
I was quite tickled by that. So I thought I'd share

HAPPY NEW YEAR
Hi everyone! That's everyone in the universe by the way, everyone from my home planet and all of those caught in the 4th dimension searching for beasts...
it's TWOTHOUSANDANDNINE.
that's how we're going to write it.
My stand-up DVD has sold a million copies in NZ ( ok not a million but it went platinum which means i got awarded a framed disc and a certificate by the Prime Minister)
( Ok not by the prime minister but by Jeremy Corbett, who should be PM in my opinion)
The DVD is still not available in America which is so silly because they are my biggest audience!!! what's going on man?
By now most of you, ok no... some of you would have seen Yes Man.
Thanks for all the great comments and letters of support.
I'm glad the movie turned out great and i was so moved by Jim's big ups to me to journalists. He's always been an inspiration to me so i was honoured (english spelling) to be in my first movie with him. Peyton the director also goes straight to my pool room (aussie saying) for being awesome.
OK well enjoy FOTC, i believe that's happening on small screens soon!
I'm still on holiday till mid Jan so I've still got some fishing and BBQ'ing to do here in the mighty South Island of Aoteroa.
I look forward to typing more words about my self soon!
Stay turned for further Darby exploits...
TWOTHOUSANDANDNINE here i come...
( i don't think that whole writing it like that is going to catch on...)
Rhysie

[size=100:1jn1kz26]FAME has been a long time coming for Rhys Darby.
The New Zealand comedian has been doing stand-up for over a decade, but it was only recently he found international success as Murray in the hit TV series Flight of the Conchords.
Last night saw Darby appear live in Perth for the first time since the rise of the Conchords, and it’s safe to say it was Murray who really attracted the sell-out crowd.
It was an odd situation, with a full-house waiting eagerly to find out just who Rhys Darby is. The more important question was, is he as funny without the Conchords?
The answer is a resounding yes, with Darby winning over the hopeful crowd with a unique blend of physical comedy and great story-telling.
But before Darby faced the crowd as himself, he appeared as a character his fans from New Zealand were likely to recognise.
Bill Napier is a ranger and environmentalist who sounds a little bit like Alf Stewart from Home and Away, but with a New Zealand accent.
Very seriously, he suggested nonsensical tips to save the environment such as carrying a coffee cup at all times and riding horses (or cattle for the ladies).
He was joined on stage by Grant Lobban, with whom he formed the comedy duo Rhysently Granted in 1996.
Last night Lobban acted as Darby’s fellow ranger before taking over for a brief and weirdly funny show of his own.
His performance was followed by an unusually long interval and impatient members of the crowd started clapping and chanting “Daaaar-Beeeee” from the top level of the theatre.
Finally, Darby emerged on stage looking more stylish than we see him as Murray.
The comedian opened his set with a hilarious ode to his late grandfather, entitled “Nam”, which started on a solemn note before exploding (literally) into an audio war scene communicated through Darby’s thundering sound effects.
He then proceeded to explain to the audience, in a manner reminiscent of his character in the Conchords, exactly how he did it and how the entire speaker system works.
This early hit with the audience set the tone for the rest of the evening, in which Darby described everything from having sex with mermaids to flying around on a jet-pack in hilarious fashion.
His style of comedy is completely unique in that he tickles the crowd by stating the obvious, explaining simple things and showing excitement about the things we all take for granted.
The live show also makes it obvious just how much of Murray Hewitt is the brainchild of Darby, with many of the comedian’s mannerisms and pranks reminiscent of his role in The Conchords.
New Zealand copped a beating as Darby ran through a list of the country’s most important achievements, and again with a story about the bumper-bugs at a NZ fun park.
Finally, he told the adoring crowd just how grateful he was for their attention after working under the radar for so many years.
With Flight of the Conchords having given him a huge audience both in Australia and overseas, Darby looks set to make a name as the stand-up performer he has always been.
