HOW TO WRITE A LOVE SONG - A MASTER CLASS WITH BRET MCKENZIE

IF you are going to write a love song to get the attention of someone you like, you have to start by finding out their name. Then get two words that rhyme with their name - for example with Hannah you could have "spanna" and "wall-planna" - this is one I’ve used with 100 per cent success!

When I did this I had a guitar but that’s not really necessary. What you can do is go to town and pick up three buskers, offer them about seven pounds each and then take them to this girl’s house. The ideal time to do this is just as she is about to go to bed.

Once you’re there, throw some stones at her window to get her attention. Tell the band to play the chords E and A and then freestyle the song over the top, filling in any gaps with "la, la, la, love you". She won’t be able to believe it - its a winner!

If the whole band thing is a bit too much for you, or the musical side of things is not your strength, then there is another way with a 70 per cent success rate. You can use someone else’s love song and cleverly add the girl’s name into the song. For example, "
You are the sunshine of my life ... Theresa".

When you’ve chosen your love song you need to go to a karaoke bar. The last thing the girl will be expecting you to do is freestyle on stage, but there you are up there singing "You are the sunshine of my life, Theresa" and the magic starts. Sometimes they’re highly impressed and sometimes, from my experience, they’re highly unimpressed …
