2006 Melbourne International Comedy Festival Review
Arj Barker – Unmitigated
Colin Flaherty – 29 April 2006
An RMIT Capitol Theatre filled to capacity greeted Arj Barker as he strode onto the stage. With his pulling power as a performer, this has been a regular occurrence this festival.
Before we got to drink from the well of Arj, his good buddy Sam Bowring did a short set of rope. It was a punchy set that was well received with plenty of laughter. Despite not selling his own show’s concept to the audience, I’m sure that he was able to convince some of the crowd to consider checking it out.
After Sam, the salivating masses were presented with the man they came to see. With a minimum of fuss and fanfare, Arj launched straight into his well scripted show. He covered a fairly broad spectrum of material starting with his tale about the misplacing of a mobile phone. We also got the obligatory material on a foreigner’s view of Australia and it’s people, particularly our recent infamous tourism campaign. My personal highlight was his dissection of the many colloquial terms that contained the word “shii”. I’m always a sucker for a bit of clever word play regardless of the vulgarity.
I must admit that my experience of seeing Arj came at the tail end of a very long and busy day, so my focus tended to waiver a little. However I did take note that the audience were constantly kept laughing over the duration of the show. Each topic that he covered was performed as a barrage of hilarious lines. This was all delivered in Arj’s very relaxed and casual manner, with plenty of his shouty, faux anger outbursts that were played up to the perfect degree. !>
Arj Barker!
One unexpected highlight of the show came when some overly adoring Arj fans threw two pairs of underwear (with messages scrawled onto them with marker) onto the stage. What was slightly disturbing was the fact that this lingerie appeared to be children’s sized Tighty Whities. I’m not sure if they did actual escape his attention for as long as they did, but Arj finally acknowledged them at the end of the show and improvised some witty banter about it.
Always the consummate performer, Arj delivered a brilliant show. His harmless observational humour kept everyone entertained and all left the venue just as happy, if not more, than when they entered.
