I'm so glad he went punk for my show. If he'd been dressed like this I wouldn't have recovered. :#ded#:

m
By Jon M. Gilbertson, Special to the Journal Sentinel
Eddie Murphy's fluffy R&
B records, Sam Kinison's late-stage division of concerts between stand-up sets and band sets and even Andy Kaufman's Elvis Presley impersonation are examples of a comedian's yearning to be a pop or rock star. None of them is particularly endearing.
Conversely, Flight of the Conchords was quite endearing Saturday night at the Riverside Theater because the duo made sport of the very idea of rock stardom while filling the venue to capacity, as rock stars do, and selling branded t-shirts and other merchandise, as rock stars also do.
The jokes usually worked because Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie aimed at a wide range of music topics, from the relative largeness of their lineup compared to the "
usual"
one-man bands of New Zealand to the mundaneness of the 22 to 23 hours of a day touring musicians don't spend onstage.
When the jokes were directly musical, they worked even better: Clement and McKenzie were solid players, with McKenzie especially fine on piano, while supplementary instrumentalist Nigel Collins — introduced as the "
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra"
— added cello and double-bass shades.
However, Conchords' greatest musical talent remained the ability to ridicule rock and pop subgenres with authoritative affection.
Many mockeries came from 2009 — the last time Flight of the Conchords appeared in Milwaukee — or earlier, when the duo had a TV series and two albums.
- Spoiler:
"
Carol Brown,"
one of the best older numbers, was almost a "
Sesame Street"
ditty, albeit about the ingenious ways women found to dump Clement. Another standout put together two hip-hop attempts — the self-censoring "
Mutha'
uckers"
and the croakily self-pitying "
Hurt Feelings"
— into a single parody of rap clichés and macho egomania.
Among repeated requests for the crowd not to tape as-yet-unreleased material, Conchords presented many new mockeries as well.
"
Stana"
(
an anagram of "
Satan,"
as the song duly noted)
told a tumbleweed-country story of a mean man who eventually became the lover of his doppelganger, Anats. "
Shady Rachel"
was a pastiche of Tom Waits-style storytelling and jazzbo pretentiousness. And "
Seagull"
resembled an Al Stewart folk-pop song with interpretive interludes and a jump from silly symbolism to clumsy, hilarious literalism.
The new material wasn'
t regularly as tight as the old — "
Stana"
rolled on too long, as if it were a Sergio Leone-directed Western — and some audience members tried to duplicate the infamous unruliness of the crowd during the aforementioned local Conchords appearance in 2009.
Yet the show kept comedy and music mostly in balance and the audience mostly in check. The gents in Flight of the Conchords might not actually be rock stars, but they have learned to use star power to get some respect.

I really like this poster though. I'd like to see it in person so I can appreciate all of the details, like the little kiwis. :#heart#: I wonder if this artist did a Bret version of the poster that we'll see later in the tour? :#pray#: I'd love that, what a fun set to add to the collection. Either way, this one is one of my favorites so far. :#happyyes#:

That's what I was thinking. It would make better sense though if they were used for both the Portland shows or something. I know they had some "
duel"
posters like that in '09.

June 18, 2016
By Michael Carriere
It has been over four years since the New Zealand-based comedy band Flight of the Conchords last toured. Their last studio album, I Told You I Was Freaky, was released in 2009, the same year that that the act pulled the plug on their eponymous HBO television program. Since then, band members Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement have seemingly left the rock-and-roll lifestyle behind: McKenzie has served as music supervisor for the rebooted Muppets film franchise, while Clement wrote, directed, and starred in the indie vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows.Ultimately, it is the laughs induced by such songs that make the Conchords continue to matter. The band emerged at a time when indie rock was moving more in the singer/songwriter direction, and beginning to take itself way too seriously. The Conchords playfully skewered both of those trends. While a lot has changed within the world of music since 2009, there is still a need for bands that can remind that humor can elicit emotion just as well as pathos. Here’s hoping the Conchords stick around a bit longer.
- Spoiler:
Yet it’s 2016 and the Flight of the Conchords are once again playing shows. Was such a reunion warranted? Based upon audience reaction during their recent sold-out performance at the Riverside Theater, the answer to such a query is a resounding “yes.” The crowd ate up such “classic” Conchord songs such as “The Most Beautiful Girl (
in the Room)
,” “Carol Brown (
Choir of Ex-Girlfriends)
,” a surprisingly poignant version of “Bowie,” and an explosive take on “Mutha’uckas/I’ve Got Hurt Feelings.” Often lost in all the jokes, stage banter, and supporting cast members (
did Murray get them the Riverside gig?)
is the fact that both McKenzie and Clement are skilled musicians. Watching them clearly enjoy playing together—particularly during an ad-hoc version of the Violent Femmes’ “Blister in the Sun”—made their performance more than an exercise in nostalgia.
What also saved the evening from being rooted solely in the past was that the duo used the show to try out new material. Some of these songs did not live up to the standards previously set by the act. “Shady Rachel” was awful (
and, with its bizarre take on jazz vocals, a tad bit offensive)
, while “The Ballad of Stana,” wasn’t quite as bad. Much better were “The Seagull,” “1353 (
Woo a Lady)
,” and “Father and Son,” with the latter being a caustic take on a father trying to convince his son that his mom is dead, when in reality she has simply moved in with a new guy named Trevor.
“Father and Son” highlight what the Conchords now do best: comment on the funny-yet-sad state of human relationships, particularly as both parties get older. It didn’t hurt that both band members, but especially Clement, have noticeably aged since the last time they were in the public spotlight. With such an appearance in mind, it was a treat to watch Clement offer an inspired version of “Business Time,” the Conchords’ ode to the joys (
?)
of pre-planned marital sex.

YES!! I couldn't agree more- that's one of the (many) things I loved at our show- how long Stana had gotten. It was great fun!
