I'll just add a little bit to our meeting with Jemaine because I don't remember much lol
I remember shaking his hand like a dork when he first turned to me I said Hi Jemaine and I asked nicely if we could get a pic.
I know when we were about to take a selfie I said I was shaking and was actually asking Jemaine to take it lol but a nice girl offered to for us at the same time. When I gave it to her it was still in selfie mode and Jemaine teased me about taking a long time lol and I don't remember exactly how he said it, I just remember saying "
I'm sorry, I'm shaking!"
lol
I'm always awkward and embarrass myself when I meet Jemaine lol Back in SLC, I meant to say "
pretend you like me"
, so he would smile in the pic but I accidentally said "
pretend we like each other"
so I sounded like I wasn't a fan of his...he laughed anyway though lol :;
D: :#wave#: :#bolt#:
And I'm still 0 for 6 trying to meet Bret :#sadlove#:

Ami I don't even know what to say, I just want to quote every line and put a million :#love3#: s as a reply.
But this especially:
This makes me so fucking happy. :#cry#: :#inlove#: :#inlove#: :#inlove#: :#cry#: [/align:3si36k17]
:#heart#: :#fit#: :#heart#: :#jem#: :#heart#: :#fit#: :#heart#: [/align:3si36k17]
Sounds like they were in a rush to the next city, so I'm SO happy he was able cut out some time to meet some fans, especially you guys. :#cloud9#:
:#love3#: :#love3#: :#love3#: :#love3#: :#love3#: :#nigel#: :#love3#: :#love3#: :#love3#: :#love3#: :#love3#: [/align:3si36k17]
I love theses details. :#love3#: I'm dying over Jem teasing you and your SLC "
pretend we like each other"
encounter.
:#hug#:
My thoughts exactly. :#dance#: :#dance#:
I wonder if it was a bigger and more rambunctious crowd because of Rhys' appearance? Like more people stayed for the chance to see all three? This crowd (the size and how amped everyone seemed to be) seems to be more of an anomaly to what we're used to. (Although who knows, I could have blocked out all the bad meet and greet stories that went sour from years prior.)
But this especially:
Amily wrote:He had both Bret and Jem in stitches. Especially Jem. :#love3#: It reminded me of the season 2 outtakes watching Jem cover his face and giggle behind his hand. :#heart#: Rhys was on stage for a significant amount of time with them. They even got him to sing a little bit of Leggy Blonde with help.. it seemed like Jemaine really wanted him to do it and was the most influential when it came to this happening. :#haha#: It was fucking adorable and hilarious and so many amazing things! Rhys also came back on stage later in the show as Murray again to play the triangle during Think About It. His dancing was sooo cute too! :#fit#: :#love3#:
This makes me so fucking happy. :#cry#: :#inlove#: :#inlove#: :#inlove#: :#cry#: [/align:3si36k17]
Amily wrote:Then after maybe 10 minutes or so a crew member told Jemaine "
2 more minutes"
before they had to go. Pretty much right after this Jem came to me and my sister and we got our time with him. It was really fast, I don't think he was outside for much more than 20 minutes total but I could be wrong because I was freaking the fuck out on the inside. :#haha#: We got our picture with him, I was able to tell him about the Flighty gifts and pretty much just thank him. It was so fast I didn't even ask him to sign anything but I don't even care. I'm just thankful for the time he did give us.
I'm sure it was less than 5 minutes after that he was making his way on to the bus.

Amily wrote:While Jem was finishing up we noticed Nigel standing by the back of the bus so we went and talked to him for a couple of minutes. I always forget how shy and soft spoken he is! :#love3#: I had my Folk The World CD with me, with Nigel in mind of signing it. When I pulled it out to ask he seemed slightly surprised to see it. He was all "
Oh wow, that's really old."
:#lol#: Then trying to remember the year. He guessed 2001 or 2002.(it was 2002) When it came to signing the CD he asked me where he should sign it and I said "
On the front.. or wherever you want"
so he signed the back. It almost seemed like he didn't feel comfortable signing the front. Awwww. :#nigel#: :#blowkiss#:

SOUND | Flight of the Conchords x Orpheum Theatre
Granville—(June 23, 2016) New Zealand folk rock comedy duo, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, Flight of the Conchords hit the Orpheum Theatre for their only Canadian date on the Flight of the Conchords Sing Flight of the Conchords North American tour.
The unconventional comedy band were in fine form regaling the crowd with a ton of new songs thanks to their reunion last year. Their extended hiatus saw Clement grow his flourishing film career as McKenzie kept up his songwriting efforts—winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the "
Man or Muppet"
song for The Muppets.
Comedian Eugene Mirman, a regular on the FOTC HBO show, opened the show with a dryly funny, deadpan stand up comedy set priming the audience. FOTC were also joined by Kiwi cellist Nigel [s:7om3whxr]Cross[/s:7om3whxr] Collins aka the one-man "
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra"
for half the set.
Band manager Murray Hewitt (comedian Rhys Darby) showed up for a surprise appearance leading to a hilarious impromptu band meeting and epic triangle solo. It was easily the highlight of the night recreating the trio's impeccable comic chemistry from the show live on stage.
Flight of the Conchords and company executed another solid comedy/musical hybrid concert full of laughs while meeting expectations while offering enough fresh elements and material.

So happy that you got even the short time you did with Jemaine. I loved every word of your recap- what a great show! How much fun to have seen Rhys in character as Murray, lol.
I'm not feeling too bad for you and your sis yet because I'm hoping that as I move on I'll next be reading about the M&
G where you met them both and got to give the Flighty gifts. In a slightly-leisurely fashion. :#heart#: :#bret#: :#jem#:

My Lame Attempt At A Recap
- Spoiler:
- First of all, I have to say it was so so so soooo good to see them on stage again! Together! The moment they came out I just had my hand over my heart and was smiling like a big idiot for the longest time. Basically until I realized how I probably looked. :#lol#: :#love3#: I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. :#cry#: :#fit#: :#inlove#: :#cloud9#:
I REALLY LOVE PARTY! :#fit#: It is so perfect and my favourite of the new songs introduced during this tour. I don'
t know what exactly it is that I love about it so much besides it being cute and hilarious but during this show, my first time hearing it there was a point during that my sister and I just could not stop laughing. Like tears in our eyes laughing barely able to breathe. I think it was partly due to just being so happy to be seeing them again but it was uncontrollable. :#excited2#:
I definitely love what Father and Son has grown into like everyone else but what I love most about the performance of it is Jemaine'
s facial expressions towards Bret throughout. :#haha#: So freaking funny and cute! :#love3#: :#jem#: :#blowkiss#:
Robots was Robots. They do something with the screen that I'
ll explain in my recap for the 2nd Portland show. Oh and I do adore Jem'
s Schwarzenegger very much. :#lol#:
After Robots Bret asks everyone how they'
re doing which leads to a whole bit where Jem makes fun of Canadians and then Americans. :#lol#: Basically everyone "
WOOOOS"
after Bret asks how they'
re doing and Jem complains that he didn'
t ask him. So, Bret asks Jem how he'
s doing and Jem says "
yeah, good"
with a buch of attitude. :#evilgrin#: Bret then says "
I meant the whole room. You'
re not as good as them by the sounds of it."
And Jem agrees that he wasn'
t as excited and they proceed to talk about how people don'
t actually scream when you ask them how they'
re doing. Jem says that he'
s spent a lot of time in Vancouver and has never seen people doing that. Then does what I'
m guessing is his best impression of a Canadian saying "
Hi how are you? The show was great, thank you."
:#rofl#: Then Bret talks about how it'
s great to be touring the country but not much of the country and starts laughing as Jem explains that it'
s their only show in Canada. (
side note: when Jem says "
Canada"
:#six#: )
Then Bret says "
it'
s the whole Canadian tour"
:#lol#: Now I'
m not sure if others noticed but on their website the Vancouver show was listed as "
Vancouver, USA"
and pretty much since the tour was announced people have been randomly hassling them about it on twitter :#haha#: Jem blames the "
American Management"
and how "
they probably don'
t know because they'
re Americans"
The whole thing was great to me just because of all the Canada talk. It was my first time seeing them in Canada so it was special just hearing it. :#love3#: :#heart#:
After The Most Beautiful Girl Jemaine tells Bret that when he lifted up his guitar to change it hit the microphone which deflected and hit him in the glasses. Bret says that it'
s very rock and roll. :#haha#: Then of course it leads to them talking about it being in their book of Rock and Roll anecdotes and how they "
went on"
with the show even though Jem could have a concussion. :#lol#:
I LOVE FOUX DU FAFA LIVE! :#excited#: I didn'
t think they had played it during any of their tours before this one but after going back into some older threads I see they were playing it in '
09 however this was my first time seeing it live. I didn'
t really know I'
d enjoy it as much as I did. Bret as the french woman hilarious. :#rofl#: :#bret#: :#blowkiss#: I like this too because with them being in Canada and french being our second language I'
m sure the audience understood a lot more of the french words they were saying. Although, I don'
t think you really need to understand any french at all for this to be hilarious. Once again, they were perfect with each other. :#inlove#: They also hassled the lighting guy at the beginning about the lights being too bright :#bret#: "
We look like we'
re about to be run over."
:#haha#:
Towards the end of Foux Du Fafa I could see that Bret was looking towards the balcony. Once the song ends he says that he doesn'
t know if they'
re watching a movie or video'
ing the show but that someone should take their phone and take a picture of their dick then text it to their mum. :#rofl#: Then they go off on a tangent as they do and Jem chimes in that not everyone has a dick, so find someone with a dick.. then by accident says "
it'
s not easy"
he then explains that if you don'
t have a dick, it'
s easy to find someone who will take a picture of theirs for you. :#lol#:
They mention the setlist and of course people start yelling out song titles and and you hear "
Carol Brown!"
so they go on about the point of a setlist being a list of songs to follow like a list and if they just did what people yelled out the whole show would derail and Jem says "
we'
re not an iphone"
:#lol#: Then Bret says how that'
s actually a good idea and they should do that one but then agree that the best way of approaching the setlist is to do the next one on the list. :#haha#:
Before starting Stana they explain that they will be singing this one with American accents. Jem says :#jem#: "
It may seem strange to you because it'
s an American accent. That'
s the United States and if there'
s any parts you don'
t undestand it will be because of that."
:#haha#: Then right after that as they'
re about to start the song someone yells out "
we want season 3!"
well you can imagine how this went down. :8-)
: Bret tells him :#bret#: "
you'
ve come to the wrong place"
:#jem#: "
This is a live show."
:#bret#: "
We do songs."
:#whip#:
Stana is wonderful and another one of my favourites that they play on tour. I'
m also so happy they keep it around and am in agreement the longer the better. :#haha#: I think the Vancouver one might be up there for one of the longest as Jem forgets the lyrics at the same part 3 times. :#lol#: After the first time Bret says he'
ll start again and Jem says "
Alright but I don'
t know if it'
s gonna help"
:#haha#: and it doesn'
t help obvoiusly as they try it 2 more times with Bret messing up one of the times as well. So they just give up and explain it :#haha#: Near the end Jem says that one of the problems with the song is that they have to describe every verse and Bret says it makes the song itself obsolete. :#rofl#: For all I know this can be standard each time they perform Stana but I loved it. :#love3#: After tht there is even more forgetting of lyrics and mess ups. :#lol#: The big cats part just gets me too. Especially when Bret asks Jem how he knows so much about big cats. :#rofl#: And how the song gets faster and faster towards the end. I love it! After the song ends Bret jokes that maybe they need to tell us what it was about. Then Jem says he thinks he messed up because of the concussion from the guitar incident earlier. :#lol#:
We didn'
t get an introduction to the vibraslap this night even though Jem used it. I'
m guessing due to the time they needed to set aside for the band meeting. :;
D: A few things were cut out that they did in other shows like Shady Rachel for one. We never had the pleasure of hearing it until we were in Portland.
I'
ll always love Mutha'
uckas and Hurt Feelings. And keeping with the trend of the guys performing songs by artists that are from the city they'
re in they chose Bryan Adams "
Summer of '
69"
which didn'
t impress Vancouver as much as they had probably anticipated. :#haha#: Jem makes a comment about it later in the show about how we "
weren'
t that into it"
and how when they were in Minneapolis they performed a Prince song and everyone loved it. "
Bryan Adams is your Prince"
he says. :#haha#: I guess we'
re not that proud? :#shrug#: It was still great to me to hear them perform the song. It was the thought that counts. :#love3#: And Nigel singing "
I'
ve got hurt feelings"
at the end! SO adorable. :#inlove#: :#nigel#: :#blowkiss#:
Seagull = :#inlove#: I got to see them perform this 3 times and each time I bust out laughing when they pan to Bret playing the piano with his "
wings"
. :#haha#: I am also convinced that they get off on seeing what kind of ridiculous things they get the audience to sing a long with. I guess Seagull has replaced the Epileptic Dogs sing a long on this tour and I'
m not complaining. :#lol#: And just Bret singing "
I'
m a seagull"
it'
s so cute! :#fit#: :#love3#:
After Seagull there'
s more yelling out from the audience and you could hear a couple of people go "
shhhhh"
and Bret comments that he likes how we police ourselves :#bret#: "
it'
s great"
:#haha#:
Then comes Fuck On The Ceiling which I LOVE and have loved since we first heard in '
13 on the Oddball tour. This needs no explanation, I don'
t think. Although, I did really enjoy their explanation that Jemaine always plays the man and Bret the lady and how this is a very different role for Bret playing a very muscular masculine man. :#haha#:
Band Meeting. WHAT???
- Spoiler:
- OK. First of all. There was NO indication that this was going to be happening so when Rhys came out on stage you can imagine everyone'
s shock. I didn'
t even believe it. I mean I was looking right at him, on stage, he was speaking and I didn'
t believe it. :#haha#: The whole audience got out of their seats and were cheering so loudly at first that you couldn'
t even hear what Rhys was saying. He paused for a bit before he continued talking.
It starts out with him just walking out going "
Band meeting. Band meeting"
:#jem#: "
No no, we'
re not having a band meeting in the middle of the show."
Rhys: "
I know this is weird, in the middle of a show but this is a big issue we'
ve got to discuss."
Rhys then takes a seat and Jemaine continues to tell him that this isn'
t an appropriate time for a band meeting.
Basically he doesn'
t care what Jemaine has to say "
We'
ve got bigger issues Jemaine, so let'
s just kick things off."
:#lol#: To which he proceeds to do roll call.
After roll call he tells them about some things that he and other people have been observing from back stage and starts with "
there'
s too much talking in your shows. That'
s just a note. And also there'
s another one here... a little bit too much singing. Is there anything else you guys could do"
Meanwhile, OF COURSE both Bret and Jem are cracking UP! It really was a little taste of what it was like for them to film the show and I loved experiencing their chemisty and Rhys'
amazing improv skills in person. :#heart#:
Rhys ask if they'
ve ever considered playing a game with the audience."
That could be quite cool"
:#jem#: "
No, we'
re a band"
Rhys "
You'
re a band? You'
re still persisting with that. OK."
:#rofl#:
He then says the 3rd item on the agenda is tidiness. "
Just simple tidienss. Now backstage it'
s very messy. Who'
s left a half eaten banana? It'
s not yours is it Jemaine?"
He then gets very upset and as he goes on his voice gets higher and higher pitched. :#lol#: "
Is that a rock and roll move? That'
s something Keith Moon would do! Why didn'
t you eat your half banana?!"
:#bret#: "
Maybe they could give us smaller bananas?"
Rhys "
Good point Bret, good point. Baby bananas for Jemaine."
:#rofl#:
Rhys "
I'
ve written a review of the show and you'
re not going to be happy with it."
:#lol#: "
I'
ve come up with a good title because you always need a good title for a review - This Is One Flight That Should Have Been Cancelled"
Everyone starts booing. :#haha#:
Rhys "
I'
ve given you 3 stars"
:#jem#: "
Well that'
s average."
Rhys "
Out of a billion. Are you happy with that?"
:#bret#: "
Would you ever give a billion stars?"
Rhys "
I was thinking in the thousands but I went with 3. I spent 45 minutes making a billion stars and I only had enough ink left to colour 3 of them in. A billion stars is a lot. What'
s a billion less 3?"
No one can seem to figure this out. :#haha#:
Then Jem starts in again about how he doesn'
t understand why they couldn'
t have done this after the gig and Rhys says "
No, it'
s scheduled in for now. Once I'
ve written something down that'
s it. It'
s in."
:#jem#: "
Couldn'
t it be changed?"
Rhys "
No, no. Imagine if life was changeable like that. Oh, let'
s change something! No, you'
ve got to be strong with your decisions!"
I'
m using a pen when I should be using a pencil!"
He then goes on about how they can'
t waste paper writing things down and then changing them. "
Paper is one of the most sought after... items in the world today!"
:#jem#: "
We need paper, baby bananas and a pencil"
Rhys "
Now that'
s all I'
ve got. Oh there'
s a highlight. One of the higlights of the review was the band meeting. I managed to have a bit of fun and a bit of a laugh, so I think I'
ll leave it there"
:#bret#: "
Yeah, we probably should get back to the gig."
Rhys "
We'
ll adjourn the meeting"
:#jem#: "
We'
ll recommence with you"
Rhys "
right and if you think I'
m getting rid of that banana you'
ve got another thing coming."
Rhys is about to leave the stage and people start yelling out for "
Leggy Blonde"
and at this point, everyone starts going nuts. I think it might have been my sister who yelled out "
PLEASE!"
:#rofl#:
So they start playing the music to Leggy Blonde and Jemaine says "
Just a little bit"
to Rhys who is hesitant. :#jem#: :#blowkiss#:
And Rhys proceeds to start telling a story...
"
Quite some time ago I met a woman that effected my life in such a way that she was special to me. It'
s not often that women come into the office and... yeah. She was leggy. Oooh yeah, she was leggy. And she was my favourite. Blonde. Anyway, this is for her... if I can remember it."
He starts out not too bad but then quickly begins to struggle so Jemaine starts helping him out by singing the song. Once Jem starts and Bret joins in you could tell the lyrics were starting to come back to Rhys and although he could use some work on his pitch he did pretty well from there consdering the last time he probably sang the song. :#haha#:
After the music stops everyone thinks it'
s done but Rhys motions like "
1 second"
with his hand ends it with acapella "
I had a budgie but it died. I like piiiiiiiiiiiiie"
:#lol#: :#cloud9#:
IT WAS SO CUTE YOU GUYS!!! :#love3#: :#fit#: :#love3#: I WANT TO GO BACK! :#cry#:
After Rhys leaves the stage Bret is like "
If anyone here has never seen our TV show that would have been really weird."
:#haha#:
The time that Rhys was on stage with the guys was probably at least 20 minutes or longer. It was a big part of the show and I'
m pretty sure they went late too as it was a nearly 2 hour long set.
Part 2 Of My Lame Attempt At A Recap
- Spoiler:
- I'
m still in love with The Summer of 1353. :#inlove#: Have been since the first time I heard it. :#heart#:
:#bret#: "
This is one of our oldest songs. It'
s called The Summer of 1353."
:#jem#: "
Before we sang The Summer of '
69"
:#bret#: "
This was before that."
This is also where Jem decides to hassle the audience about not being into their cover of "
Summer of '
69"
enough. :#lol#: He also sings like 2 seconds of "
Everything I Do, I Do It For You."
:#haha#: :#six#:
Anyway, I love how they'
ve tweaked ithis song just so slightly and of course the addition of the 3 of them playing recorders is hilarious and cute. :#haha#: :#love3#: When the recorder shenanigans started Bret walked over the edge of the stage and started putting his recording in front of his crotch to act as his penis. He starts motioning to someone in the audience like egging them on. Right away my sister and i were like "
oh no, not again"
thinking that this was going to be Sugalumps all over again. :#haha#: Sure enough it pretty much was because as soon as the person got up from their seat to reach out for Bret'
s dick recorder he pulled away and was like "
whoa whoa whoa"
:#lol#: :#bret#: :#blowkiss#: At the end Bret tries to get everyone to clap, to a beat and starts clapping but EVERYONE was just clapping to their own beats and it made no sense at all. Bret made the CUTEST face like "
WHAT THE HELL?"
and started laughing. He then made everyone stop and try again. We all got it this time. :#lol#:
After the song is done Bret tells Jemaine about how he pretended his recorder was his dick. :#lol#: He apologizes to the lady he tricked into trying to grab "
Sorry about that"
and then they talk about how it was pretty rock and roll and it'
s another chapter for their book. :#lol#: Jem says that they'
ll leave out the part about the sexual harassment stuff. :#haha#:
Love how Bowie has changed in such a small way. It'
s the perfect "
last song"
. They'
ve made it beautiful and renewed my love for it. :#cry#: :#heart#:
Love the encore banter. It'
s mostly just funny because it'
s true. :#haha#: :#love3#:
The last song was Think About It and Rhys came back out for it! :#excited#:
Rhys "
I'
ve got some more feedback, just from Matt and the guys out in the back there. They suggested maybe you should have me on this one. Have you thought about maybe having the triangle in one of your songs? Oh look! Here'
s one"
and he picks up the triangle. :#rofl#:
Rhys "
Can I play that Jemaine? I quite just liked being out here before"
as he makes the saddest most pitiful face! :#fit#: Everyone in the audience is going "
awwwwwww"
:#jem#: "
No, I don'
t think so."
:#bret#: "
Do you all want Murray to play triangle?"
:#grouphug#: "
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
:#jem#: "
This is ridiculous now. There'
s 4 of us on stage. We look like a 4 piece band."
(
NIgel is on stage at this point too)
:#bret#: "
We'
re more like the Beatles now"
Rhys "
You know who we'
re like? The Beatles"
:#jem#: "
Bret JUST said that"
Rhys "
Well great minds think a like Jemaine and you didn'
t think of it did you?!"
:#rofl#:
:#bret#: "
Have you ever played the triangle before?"
:#jem#: "
Have you ever played the triangle before in your life?"
Rhys "
I'
m familiar with the triangle actually. I'
ve had the odd threesome."
Then they start the song and Rhys proceeds to play the cutest most adorable triangle and dancing there could ever be! :#love3#: :#cloud9#: :#love3#:

We weren't able to give the Flighty gifts to the guys in person. I'll explain more in my recap for the 2nd Portland show but it was actually Matt who handed them off the to guys because there were no more opportunities for us after Vancouver. Jemaine suggested for us to give them to someone on the crew so the only person we trusted was Matt. Now we're just hoping that he came through! :#haha#: :#pray#:tornadogirl wrote:I'm not feeling too bad for you and your sis yet because I'm hoping that as I move on I'll next be reading about the M&

I'm not going to quote everything I loved reading about your experiences...because I'd have to quote ALL of it! Man- what a GREAT show you guys got! One-of-a-kind, for sure! I hope a full video shows up....even if it might have a pic of someone's dick at the end, lol! (They may have recorded the whole show for all we know...) :#lol#: I was laughing out loud and imagining it all in my head as you described it.
Chips &
Dips (Party) is one of my favorites as well. I particularly loved hearing that it was just Bret and Jemaine at the party and that Bret's wife basically kicked Jemaine out, lol!
Jemaine concussing himself with his guitar, the ensuing banter about it, blaming it for forgetting parts of Stana, (I can totally believe this as they didn't mess up Stana at all here in Detroit) and everything to do with Rhys are my favorite parts! :#love3#: :#angel#: :#rofl#:
Thank you for the wonderful write-up. :#heart#: I'm really sorry you didn't get to give the gifts to them in person....will you tweet them?

Aww, well it was fun to write-up! And no worries about not being able to give the gifts in person, I'm not upset about it in the least. Of course, that would have been the best case scenario but the outcome we ended up with was pretty great too. I don't think I'll tweet him about it. One Flight that Should Have Been Cancelled (not really)
Posted by SOUNDTRACTVANCOUVER on JUNE 30, 2016
Smoke filled the adorned Orpheum Theater on June 23 as eager fans flooded the theater to see a sold out show. The smoke no doubt foreshadowed a night fueled with behemoth rock n’ roll, unlike anything these fans have ever seen. It was futile warning for fans to brace themselves, as New Zealand’s legendary Flight of the Conchords would rain fire. They launched their set off with a viscous rock n’ roll move of eating a banana before coming on and daring not to finish it. It was pandemonium as fans were gob smacked at the sheer magnitude of Jemaine Clement’s badassery and Brett Mackenzie’s zero cares for backstage cleanliness. It was a moment that will likely be hammered into the boulder of rock n’ roll history.
A DAY IN THE LIFE WITH EUGENE
Aside from legendary rock n’ roll moments, the rest of the evening with the eclectic musical comedy duo was in fact a lot of fun. Comedian, Eugene Mirman (Flight of the Conchords, Bob’s Burgers) warmed the crowd up with many personal tales of the various joys in his life, such as bombarding a pastor online with various questions like how to settle a paternity test without chopping the baby in half. The crowd was tickled with Mirman’s set and was now ready for some guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk (there it is).
IN WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW
The duo rocked the party all night with the bearded Brett adorned in a suit and the sans beard Jemaine in what appeared to be a red jumpsuit. As they sat amongst an array of guitars with lights that spanned the whole colour spectrum, they played much from their library that fans would recognize. The Parisian “Fou du FaFa,” the hard hitting and brutally honest mix of "
[s:3tv16xgk]Hiphopopotamus vs Rhymenoceros/Tears of a Rapper[/s:3tv16xgk] "
Mutha'uckas/Hurt Feelings"
, and the captivating “Most Beautiful Girl in the Room” were just a few of the familiar tracks to grace the ears of listeners. New tracks were also introduced, and they did not disappoint. From fucking on the ceiling to romantic ballads on wooing in 1353, Flight of the Conchords show that they can still deliver hilariously unexpected music. And even though the duo killed it playing their songs, perhaps the best part of the show was when a fan favourite interrupted the gig.
BAND MEETING
Right smack in the middle of their evening in Vancouver, Flight of the Conchords was interrupted by thunderous applause that would rattle the walls of the Orpheum. The cause of this disruptive outcry was none other than Rhys Darby, or more commonly known in the theater that evening as Murray Hewitt, band manager. For fans, this was an amazing moment as they were treated to essentially a live performance of the Flight of the Conchords TV show. Murray, no longer sporting his goatee, interrupted the gig to hold a band meeting concerning the current gig. As per usual he began the meeting with roll call. Once the ravenous cheers had died down he addressed item number one, a half eaten banana and immediately chastised Jemaine for his uncleanliness. It was amazing to see Clement cover his mouth as he desperately tried to hold in the laughter, while Darby remained unfazed and in character. Once the band meeting wrapped up and Darby was about to let the gig resume fans cried out for “Leggy Blonde,” an emotional office romance ballad that featured Murray Hewitt. The now trio, an unheard of grouping for New Zealanders according to the band, stumbled their way through what appeared to be an unrehearsed song.
While there was not as much singing from the crowd than I would have liked, the evening overall was an incredible experience. It was a perfect balance of old and new, with both sides delivering big laughs. While band manager, Murray Hewitt, may have already written the review title for this show, this writer believes that it was in fact one flight that will be remembered for a long time.
