Comedy folk duo Flight of the Conchords will return home to perform a nine-date New Zealand tour in June and promise to show Christchurch some special love.

The Grammy award-winning pair, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, have announced three South Island dates – Dunedin's Regent Theatre on June 23, Queenstown's Events Centre on June 24 and Nelson's Trafalgar Centre on June 27.

Tour co-promoter Brent Eccles said there would be a Christchurch show.

"
There will be a special Christchurch show but we can't announce it just yet,"
Eccles said.

"
There are things about the show that are unique to Christchurch. The band are keen to do something special for Christchurch, and we're ironing out the details as that show will be slightly more intricate."


The Press understands the Christchurch appearance will be a benefit concert for the city.

McKenzie said it was "
going to be great"
to play New Zealand again.

"
I can't wait to perform where people can understand our accents,"
he said.

Clement said: "
It's a lot more convenient than going to another country, isn't it?"

This June is business time. The Flight of the Conchords will perform at the CBS Canterbury Arena on Tuesday, June 26.

The "
almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand"
, comprising Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, will donate all proceeds from ticket sales from their Christchurch show, after costs, to a Christchurch charity that will be announced shortly.

All tickets are $50 and no pre-sale tickets are available. Initially all tickets will be available by application in person at the venue box office from 9am on Saturday, March 31. They are limited to four a person. If any tickets remain, internet and phone sales will be available from 1pm on March 31 through Ticketek.co.nz, phone 0800-TICKET.

Promoters say this is a bid to address concern about ticket scalping in recent weeks and that they want to get tickets in local people's hands.

American standup comedian Arj Barker, Clement and McKenzie's indifferent friend, and Dave Mohumbhai, the pawn shop guy from their HBO TV sitcom, will be the support act for their New Zealand tour.

Because of overwhelming demand, the duo have announced an extra show in their hometown of Wellington on June 21 at the Michael Fowler Centre.

Tickets for 10 shows around New Zealand were snapped up within 10 minutes when they went on sale online last week.

LINE UP: A group of Christchurch students were the first people to queue for Flight of the Conchords tickets outside the CBS arena today.

Christchurch fans have begun queuing for Flight of the Conchords tickets.

Tickets for the comedy duo's show at the CBS Canterbury Arena on June 26 will go on sale tomorrow at 9am.

Ben McDowell started camping out with six friends about 12.30pm today.

"
We really wanted to be at the front of the line,"
he told The Press.

The students were alone in the queue this afternoon but expected more people to join tonight.

"
Spirits are high at 3pm,"
Brett Hargadon said.

The fans were keeping themselves entertained during the long wait with games but had "
finished most of our food already"
, Cody Trillo-Feely said.

In a bid to beat scalpers, tickets sold before 1pm tomorrow must be bought in person at the venue.

They are limited to four per person.

Vbase general manager Russell Kenny said this afternoon that a small queue had formed outside the Addington venue.

Barriers to manage the crowd and portable toilets would be in place overnight, he said.

Tickets to Flight of the Conchords' Christchurch concert are being scalped on Trade Me.

The Kiwi comedy duo tried levelling the playing field for their June 26 show by ensuring tickets could only be bought in person from CBS Canterbury Arena before 1pm on Saturday.

After then they were available over the phone and on the internet.

Hundreds queued at the arena overnight to secure seats, but it appears scalpers were not deterred.

Two tickets have been listed on the auction website for $650 - more than six times their $50 face value.

''They are excellent seats and extremely close to the stage,'' the seller said.

''The eight hours in line was worth it.''

Bidding on another two Christchurch concert tickets has reached $120. The reserve has been met and bidding has reached at least $20 more the face value.

''I've bought these tickets in pre-sale after queuing up for six hours, only to find that my friends who promised to go with us couldn't go. So, these are now excess two tickets and can be enjoyed by others who appreciate them,'' the seller said.

A third set of tickets was being auctioned for charity, according to the seller.

''I had bought my friends tickets standing in line but they seemed to have got them online.

''Any profits made from this auction will be donated straight to St John ... I will not keep any extra money.''

Flight of the Conchords are pleased to announce that ticket proceeds after costs from their Christchurch show, with very special guest Arj Barker, on Tuesday 26 June at Christchurch's CBS Canterbury Arena, will be donated to Cholmondeley Children's Charity and to the restoration and repair of the Isaac Theatre Royal.

Cholmondeley (Chum-ley) provides respite care for children aged 3 - 12 years, with the aim of alleviating immediate family pressures for the children and their parents. They have helped more than 25,500 children in their 87 years of operation and General Manager Shane Murdoch said, "
We are very grateful for the generous donation. This money will be used to provide day to day care for the children in Canterbury that need us. Many of these families have been affected by the on-going impact of earthquakes, are experiencing significant stress in their homes and need a break"

The iconic, heritage listed, 104 year old Isaac Theatre Royal suffered extensive damage from the series of Christchurch earthquakes last year and is embarking on a major repair and recovery process over the next 12 months. General manager Neil Cox is delighted with the news that the Conchords will contribute to the famous Theatre's restoration. He said "
The Conchords last performed in Christchurch in 2006 on OUR stage before they took over the world... so it is fantastically fitting that our extensive recovery costs will be helped considerably by their Christchurch concert in June. It is an incredibly generous offer of support for which we are eternally grateful and hopefully we can welcome them back on our stage again to celebrate the Theatre's reopening"
