As far as partnerships go, this one is for the birds. Literally.

20th Century Fox struck a deal to bring the domesticated macaw and other feathered characters from its forthcoming big-screen animated film, "
Rio,"
to one of the most popular mobile game applications for the small screen, Angry Birds.

The Finnish creators of Angry Birds will release a version of the game -- Angry Birds Rio -- to coincide with the film's March 22 world premiere in Rio. The movie opens in theaters April 15.

On Friday, Fox Filmed Entertainment co-Chairman Jim Gianopulos announced the partnership with game developer Rovio in a press event on the Fox studio lot in Century City under a tent with giant beach balls. The studio also screened 26 minutes of footage, introduced by director Carlos Saldanha and voice stars Jamie Foxx, Anne Hathaway and George Lopez.

Fox hopes to tap into the pop-culture phenomenon that is Angry Birds (downloaded some 75 million times and counting) to build awareness for its latest animated project from Blue Sky Studios, creators of the "
Ice Age"
blockbusters.

Rovio, meanwhile, gets to introduce a new version of the game (using Blue Sky's intellectual property), and capitalize on the marketing blitz that is planned for the theatrical release.

"
It's about taking that traditional entertainment experience -- whether in theaters or on the TV screen -- and creating a new level of engagement,"
said Peter Levinsohn, president of new media and digital distribution for 20th Century Fox.

Levinsohn's group has been been working to find logical digital extensions of Fox's entertainment properties. For example, it created a "
Glee"
karaoke app that lets Gleeks sing along with songs from the popular Fox TV show, or connect with other Glee fans online for a virtual recording session.

On January 28th, 20th Century Fox hosted a special Sneak ‘Beak’ screening of clips from Blue Sky Studios’ latest animated film, Rio, set to hit theaters on April 15th. Directed by Carlos Saldanha (the man behind the Ice Age films), the bird-centric 3D animated comedy features the voices of Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway as Blu and Jewel (two rare blue macaws), Jamie Foxx as a yellow canary who knows how to handle women, and George Lopez as a friendly toucan who helps Blu and Jewel escape from kidnappers looking to make a fortune off the extremely rare birds.

The clips Saldanha showed off to the preview audience introduced each of the main characters [size=140:3ldmdj7o](Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords as the voice of the villain was a big hit with the preview audience) and provided a short but revealing look at what audiences can expect from Rio. In an interview prior to the sneak ‘beak’, Saldanha told me he upped the colors to compensate for the muted effect caused by 3-D glasses, and this animated film does look much brighter than most 3-D animated movies. The clips Saldanha chose to show off also revealed Rio‘s a high-energy project filled with action sequences and [size=140:3ldmdj7o]song &
dance numbers.

Saldanha was joined by Rio voice cast members Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx and George Lopez for the sneak beak, and following the screening of the clips the cast and Saldanha took part in a press conference to discuss the project.

20th Century Fox has just debuted their new Super Bowl TV spot online (via Apple) for the upcoming animated adventure-comedy Rio, starring the voices of: Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Jemaine Clement, Rodrigo Santoro, Jamie Foxx, Will i Am, George Lopez and Leslie Mann. Nothing too out of the ordinary here, just the typical fun TV spot introducing this movie to as many audiences as they can. A nerdy macaw who lives in a small-town zoo in Minnesota takes off on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro.

Rio is directed by Rio de Janeiro native Carlos Saldanha, who co-directed of Blue Sky's Ice Age, Robots, Ice Age: The Meltdown and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs previously. The screenplay was written by family writer Don Rhymer, of Big Momma's House, The Santa Clause 2, Agent Cody Banks 2, The Honeymooners, Deck the Halls, and Surf's Up previously. This is Blue Sky Studios sixth feature animated film since Ice Age in 2002. 20th Century Fox will be bringing Rio to theaters everywhere in 3D starting April 15th this spring.

Blu and Linda think he's the last of his kind, but when they learn about another Macaw who lives in Rio de Janeiro, they head to the faraway and exotic land to find Jewel (Anne Hathaway), Blu's female counterpart. Not long after they arrive, Blu and Jewel are kidnapped by a group of bungling animal smugglers. With the help of street smart Jewel, and a group of wise-cracking and smooth-talking city birds, Blu escapes.
