Animation is pioneering a new era of groundbreaking films

WITH the advances of 3D technology, animation is pioneering a new era of groundbreaking films.

If you have any doubt we’ve entered a new era in animated features, you need look no further than last year’s worldwide box-office figures. The highest grossing movie of 2010 was Toy Story 3 and there were four other animations in the top 10.

“Basically, it’s because of the quality of the movies,” says director Carlos Saldanha, of Blue Sky Studios, who was responsible for 2009’s third highest-grossing movie, Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, the two previous Ice Age movies and Robots. “Good stories, great characters, an appealing cast and cutting-edge technology to make outstanding visuals – all these elements combined make a good package for everybody.”

His latest film, Rio, has those characteristics in spades. In it, Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), a rare blue macaw who’s the last male of his species, travels from his hometown in the US to Rio de Janeiro to meet Jewel (Anne Hathaway), the only female of his kind still in existence. In the Brazilian city, they run into poachers and need the help of a hilarious band of feathered friends and one drooling bulldog, Luiz (Tracy Morgan), to escape, before trying to find Blu’s owner, Linda (Leslie Mann), at Carnival. From the moment the film opens, the sights and sounds (the soundtrack was produced by legendary Brazilian musician Sérgio Mendes) lead viewers on an energetic ride through one of the world’s most visually captivating cities.

The story idea first came to Saldanha in about 2002, but he really started to develop his concept “between Ice Ages”. “My original story was about a penguin who arrived on the beaches of Rio and met all these rare tropical birds, then went to Carnival,” he explains. “But when I was developing the story about the penguin, a lot of penguin movies came out: Happy Feet, March of the Penguins and a few others. But I still wanted to tell the tale about the birds in Rio, and I liked the contrast of the guy who comes from the cold and goes into the tropics. One of my characters was a rare blue macaw, so I decided to come up with a similar story of a rare blue macaw that comes from the cold – in this case, the Midwest of the United States.”

Serious work on Rio began in 2006 and has continued in earnest until just weeks before its worldwide April release. It’s intensive work for a crew that numbers in the hundreds. Animator Paul Diaz, for instance, is one of two character leads who worked on the character of Pedro (will.i.am), a red cardinal. “A character lead’s job involves taking the character through various phases of pre-production and production, contributing creatively to its development and movement style,” he says. “I helped define specific traits and personality that embody Pedro.”

The first crucial phase of production, however, was finding the right talent to voice Rio’s characters. “We create a profile of each character,” explains Saldanha. “So Blu, for example, is an awkward, indoors kind of bird. Based on that profile, we make a list of the actors we think will be able to fit the casting of the character. We always have more than one, because you never know who you’ll be able to get, but we have our favourites. In general, the actors will have a similar quality and range to match the character’s.”

For those of us whose prime involvement with Hollywood involves rocking up to the local cinema for cheap Tuesday, the production process of an animated feature is quite unknown. For instance, did you know the cast very rarely works together in the studio?

“I don’t think I’ve met any other members of the cast,” says Jemaine Clement, who plays cockatoo Nigel, a former soapstar who’s now caught up in a kidnapping ring. “The director, or other people who are around, read the other characters’ lines for you.

“It can be kind of embarrassing to do the faces and gestures of a character when no one is actually filming you, but someone is still watching you. There’s a tiny camera recording what you’re doing, for the animators to refer to later. It also takes a lot less time [than filming live-action movies];
you could be finished in a couple of hours, depending on your part. You just come in and read your lines and you don’t have to do any physical acting for the role.”

That’s not to say it’s an easy ride for the actors, especially in this case, given that the director was born and bred in Rio de Janeiro, which fuelled his passion for the movie.

“It’s probably the most difficult and tedious, and most precise thing I’ve ever done,” says George Lopez, who plays toucan Rafael. “For Carlos, being from Brazil, it’s inherently in his heart and blood that every inflection be specific, that every word in a song match his intention – and that rarely happens. Some directors make concessions or they’ll say, ‘That’s OK, don’t worry about.’ I think, if you talked to any of the actors in Rio, they’ll tell you this was a very specific project.”

The actors were shown initial sketches of their characters and storyboards before they made a decision to sign on. And while there are advantages to not having your face appear onscreen (“You don’t have to take a shower to go to work,” says Lopez), bringing emotion and nuance to a performance with your voice presents other challenges.

“You have to use your imagination to picture something that maybe hasn’t even been drawn yet,” explains Eisenberg. “I found myself saying the lines with my eyes closed. It was easier that way, because I could visualise the scenario and then get into the spirit of it. On a movie set, there are cameras and a big crew around you, but at least you have props and people in costume, so the facade is a little richer.”

Actors often go to the recording studio several times to record their parts, sometimes re-recording past attempts. “I did perhaps eight sessions in about a year,” says Lopez. “As I started to develop the character and give him a stronger voice, I’d go back in and redo some of the stuff I’d done earlier. That happens when you do animation. In the beginning, you’re still finding your voice. By the end, when I’ve found it, I always ask the director if I can redo some stuff from the beginning, and they usually say yes.”

Throughout the process of recording the voices, a team of animators and modellers are working on both the look of the characters and the sets. Particularly important for Saldanha was capturing the vibe of his hometown;
he even took some of his crew to Rio to explore and see iconic landmarks, such as Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado mountain, to help them with their work.

“The key for me, though, wasn’t so much to build the perfect copy of the city, but to also create the vibe,” says Saldanha. “I wanted to convey the flavour, the spirit and the styles of Rio in everything. I want the audience to feel as though they are in Rio.”

Production buckled down once the voice soundtrack was completed and Saldanha had cut together the sequences on storyboards to see how the film would play out. “The second stage of it is animating the characters,” he explains. “The animators then almost become the actors – they hear the voice and they have to interpret the character in their mind and put their artistry into making it come to life. It’s like a combo platter: first, I work with the actors as a director to get them to deliver their vocal performance, then I work with the animators to direct them to give the physical performance of the character.”

“With animation, you can play with colour and be precise with things that can’t necessarily be achieved on a live-action film, because human beings are fallible and have limitations,” adds Hathaway.

It’s a long way from the first-ever full-length animation feature, Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Developed using hand-drawn cel animation, production began in early 1934 and cost almost US $1.5 million. Released in 1937, and re-released nine times since, it has grossed US $185 million during its lifetime, despite the fact Disney’s wife, Lillian, told him, “No one’s ever gonna pay a dime to see a dwarf picture.”

Like many of the films that are released today, Rio uses 3D technology, although, as Saldanha explains, it doesn’t affect the way he approaches creating a movie: “For me, the most important thing is making a good film that will play well in any theatre, anywhere. I embraced 3D on Ice Age 3;
it’s another format that will mean my movie screens in more theatres. But it doesn’t change the quality of my storytelling;
it just makes the viewing process more interesting.”

Certainly, with Rio, the attention to detail and the new technology create a visually stunning film – for people of all ages. “It’s about creating layers of sophistication, and few mediums make that possible,” explains Saldanha. “It would be very hard to make a live-action movie where you could do that. In animation, you have jokes for the parents, jokes for the kids, a storyline for the adults and another one for the kids, all in one package that’s fluid and interesting to watch.”

Eisenberg agrees: “Animated movies – the really good ones – can transcend age and gender and demographic. Rio has jokes that make me laugh – a cynical 27-year-old – that wouldn’t alienate a six-year-old.”

“Because of the technology, you can bring a sense of magic to even straightforward stories,” adds Hathaway. “If films are the realms of the imagination, animated films take you to the limit of the imagination.”

For Clement, the attraction of animation is far more basic: “I think there’s a novelty in watching things that don’t normally talk, whether it’s toys or cars, or insects or birds.”

Rio is in cinemas April 7.

MEET THE CAST

Jesse Eisenberg/Blu
In Rio, the Academy Award nominee (for his role in The Social Network) plays our hero, Blu. “There was something immediately endearing about him,” says the actor. “He grew up in a small town, then gets swept up in a very different world in Rio. It’s a perfect parallel to my life growing up in New Jersey and being captivated by the movie industry.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anne Hathaway/Jewel
The 28-year-old who’s starred in films such as The Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada says she was drawn to the role of Blu’s love interest, Jewel. “I loved playing her because she’s so passionate about freedom. I was struck by how nice it would be to be part of a story of hope, about a character who, in learning courage, becomes free.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jemaine Clement/Nigel
An actor, comedian and musician, New Zealand-born Clement hit the big time with the cult show Flight of the Conchords. In Rio, he plays the villainous cockatoo, Nigel. “The film-makers knew they wanted an antipodean accent, because Nigel is an Australian bird and a former soap opera actor – which is quite Australian, too.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jamie Foxx/Nico
The multi-talented Foxx is a singer/songwriter, talk-radio host, stand-up comedian and, of course,
actor, who won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Ray Charles in Ray in 2005. His part in Rio, as Nico, is his first animated movie role. “Mine and will.i.am’s characters are like the ambassadors of entertainment in this film. We supply the wild side, the music, the life.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

will.i.am/Pedro
Aside from his fame in hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas, will.i.am recently explored big-screen opportunities in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In Rio, he plays a red-crested cardinal, his second turn in an animated film – he played Moto Moto in Madagascar 2. “I can’t wait to see Pedro getting down, doing samba and rapping,” he says.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE RHYTHM OF RIO
Sérgio Mendes is the boss of bossa nova, the sultan of samba and as much a part of Rio’s success as the actors or animators. The soundtrack, a collaboration between Mendes, composer John Powell, the film’s cast and some of Brazil’s best-loved musicians, is a celebration of the city, says Mendes.
“Brazilian music is romantic and sensual, and you can dance to it,” says the Brazilian singer whose career spans more than 50 years. “During Carnival, the whole country dances and parties for a week. It’s part of Rio’s culture.”
One song that appears in the movie will be familiar to everyone. ‘Mas Que Nada’ was first released 45 years ago, and was a hit again in 2006, when Mendes re-recorded it with the Black Eyed Peas. It’s also featured on other film soundtracks.
“It has such a haunting melody. It’s very simple and very easy to remember, and it exudes the sensuality and rhythms of Brazil,” says Mendes when asked about the enduring quality of his most famous song.
The other songs on the Rio soundtrack are new and feature Brazilian musicians such as Carlinhos Brown and Bebel Gilberto. Actor Jemaine Clement co-wrote and performs his character’s song, ‘Pretty Bird’. “That was one of the most exciting parts of being in the movie because Sérgio Mendes plays piano on it,” he says. “My family was into his music in the ’60s and I still listen to it now, so it was really cool.”
Just some of the nice things I've been reading about Jemaine/Nigel. Smile
In a role written for him, Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement saves Rio single-handledly with a bossa nova routine of theatrical bitterness, explaining why his former soap opera star crossed over to the dark side.
...
Rio is always enjoyable, thanks to Eisenberg and Clement's presence ...
http://www.thisisfakediy.co.uk/articles/film/rio
Jemaine Clement shines as the cockatoo baddie, even getting to do a Conchords-style number, sadly the only highlight among a small collection of forgettable and superfluous songs.
http://alone-in-the-dark-pg.blogspot.co ... %20Clement
... the person who steals the shows is Jemaine Clement who voices the evil, Nigel. He is so good you’ll think it is an actor of the calibre of Geoffrey Rush behind the mic.
http://www.mediasearch.com.au/film/film ... filmreview
In fact, it's Clement's terrifying feathered villain who practically walks away with the movie. A showbiz performer-turned-mercenary, Nigel treads the fine line between camp and cruel, even getting his own musical number that recalls some of the best FOTC tunes.
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/movi ... 0/rio.html
... the deliciously nasty Nigel - an Aussie-accented cockatoo that local audiences will especially appreciate. Voiced with Geoffrey Rush-like aplomb by New Zealander Jemaine Clement (Flight Of The Conchords), this is just an example of the brilliant vocal work here.
http://www.filmink.com.au/review/rio-film/
Fighting for the dark side is a cockatoo from Down Under named Nigel, voiced by Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement. "
A story is only as good as its villain,"
says Saldanha, "
and we think Nigel is a great bad guy. He's an ex-soap opera star who still holds a grudge about losing a role, years earlier, to a much younger and prettier bird. Nigel is very dramatic, very dry, and very, very funny."
"
Nigel is embittered,"
adds Clement. "
He was once a successful and good-looking bird. But his physical appearance changed to reflect his inner evildoer. And believe me, Nigel is not a good guy. Any chance he gets to do something evil, he'll take it. He eats chicken! What kind of bird eats chicken?"
The filmmakers credit the actor-singer for giving Nigel so many unexpected layers. Not only does Clement voice the role, but he also co-wrote and performs a fun musical number that introduces Nigel. Saldanha and the writers came up with an idea and framework for the song Pretty Bird, but the tune and character really came to life when Clement and the songwriters locked themselves in a room and fleshed it out. "
Jemaine really owned Nigel,"
says producer Bruce Anderson. "
He added all these wonderful alliterations and textures to the character's voice, personality and attitude."
http://www.blockbuster.co.uk/bbsitecont ... 1/rio.aspx
Enter Nigel, an evil cockatoo played by Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords. He's white, ugly and brilliant at terrifying children. Plus he gets a song. And it's a great song, featuring such inspired lyrics as 'I poop on people and blame it on seagulls' and 'Like an abandoned school / I have no principles'. A former showbiz cockatoo with a maniacal cackle, Nigel is flat-out the best thing in the whole film.
...
It's hardly How to Train Your Dragon, but Nigel is as menacing as any fire-breathing monster. When the Conchord is on screen, Rio really takes flight.
Interview: Carlos Saldanha
The Rio and Ice Age director talks Jesse Eisenberg, Jemaine Clement and Angry Birds, plus signed posters to give away!
Rio - Page 8 Carlossaldanha600.jpg
He brought us the adorable Ice Age movies, and now Carlos Saldanha relocates to his native Brazil for the colourful Rio.
The director has assembled a suitably diverse voice cast - Jesse Eisenberg and Will.i.am for starters - for this fun adventure. Eisenberg voices Blu, a rare macaw poached as a fledgling in the Brazilian rainforest. He ends up in the good hands of a Minnesota book store owner, thus has never learned to fly. When a scientist persuades Blu's owner to bring him to Rio to mate with the last female of the species (Anne Hathaway's Jewel) he ends up kidnapped by an evil cockatoo named Nigel (Jemaine Clement).
Speaking to Saldanha while he was in London, he explains why the theme of poaching was important to him. "
I always wanted to have that element to it,"
said the Rio-born director, who relocated to New York to follow his animation dream. "
Normally when I come up with a story, I come up with the big crisis, which has to be overcome. Growing up in Brazil, that's something constantly on the news - apprehension of birds, caged, ready to be shipped away, or being kept in smaller cages, hundreds of them until they die. I always felt very against it, and I decided I liked birds flying more than I like birds in a cage."
Saldanha speaks fondly of his ace voice cast, having bagged pre-Social Network Eisenberg, and his hero Jemaine Clement. He met with Eisenberg over a year ago: "
A lot of people didn't know who he was, but I knew The Social Network might be the movie he became famous for."
Saldanha knew right away Jesse was perfect: "
I struggled with that character for a long time, in terms of the voice, so when he came to the session, I felt this is it - this is Blu."
Blu, a geeky but socially naïve bird, has no idea how to act around Jewel. "
He had a very interesting combination of awkwardness and sweetness. I believed in him as Blu, and he gave a lot of heart to the character, which is what I needed."
As for Clement, Saldanha couldn't have found a better star for dastardly, warped Nigel. "
Jemaine, from the get go I wanted to make a movie with him,"
he enthuses. "
I was always a big fan of Flight of the Conchords, and I wanted this character [Nigel] to be over the top. I wanted him to have the flavour of his songs in Flight of the Conchords. I wanted his song to tell the flavour of this bird. That's what I love about Flight of the Conchords - they tell stories, and they tell them in the most charming, funny, awkward, different way, and I wanted this character to have that."
In this recent with Clement, we learned that Saldanha dropped a musical number on him. The director admits: "
I counted on him to improvise, we wanted him to be loose. He's great that way - he delivers the line the way you need him to do it, but he finds little Jemaine elements. He's a prolific mind. A classic Jemaine thing - there was one part of the movie where he goes, 'where are the cerulean birds'. He didn't quite know what cerulean was and we told him, so he added 'where are the cerulean birds - he means blue, by the way'."
The spirit of Carnival was present in last week's Rio World Premiere, where every member of the cast piled down to the city for the event. Saldanha confesses he couldn't quite believe it happened: "
Every time we recorded, I would say jokingly, oh we're gonna do the premiere in Rio, everyone's gonna come. Finally, they said yes - we're gonna do the premiere in Rio. When I told the actors, they were all excited! At first, we thought maybe we'd just bring a couple of actors to Rio, and then it was like, I wanna go, I wanna go, so they all came. The only one who'd been before was Will.i.am. I saw him in Rio for Carnival two weeks before."
Rio - Page 8 Carlospremiere.jpg
The key crew from Blue Sky Studios had been taken to Rio a couple of years previously, to capture the spirit of Carnival for the film's finale. "
I took the animation supervisors, the writers, just to get a feel for Rio. I wanted them to have a first-hand experience of the city, to capture unique elements, so it doesn't feel generic. I wanted it to stand out in that sense, with the details."
After many years at Blue Sky, and several Ice Age films, does he ever want to step into live action? "
Animation is my comfort zone,"
he admits. "
I love working with the animators and the creation of the characters in different scenarios. I'm open for a live action gig if it happens. I like movie-making, so if was live action, I would take the challenge, but I'm definitely more connected with animation."
But for now, the next thing Saldanha is working on is a vacation.
What out of the recent wealth of animated films has caught the director's eye? "
I loved How To Train Your Dragon. I saw other good ones, like Rango, Tangled and Toy Story 3, but that was the one that blew me away. I loved the story, characters and the energy was brilliant."
Finally, we absolutely had to ask him about the Angry Birds tie-in. Rovio Mobile, who developed the crack equivalent of smartphone apps, recently launched Angry Birds: Rio, using scenarios from the film. "
It was interesting, because when I was making the movie, a couple of years ago, someone said if you're making a movie about birds you have to download this app called Angry Birds. I downloaded it, and loved it. I was addicted to it. Then later on, they approached me and said they were thinking about a tie-in with Angry Birds, and I thought it was a brilliant idea - it's the perfect match."
Favourite bird? "
I like the little red guy."
Are you able to watch these parts till the end, like for example Fact or Fiction question Jemaine answers in part 1? I couldn't watch it online, the video stops earlier. I could see it only when I downloaded it. :#shrug#:
ADD Did Anne said 'JeRmaine' in part 2? :#hmm#:
From an interview with the director:
Q. What about Nigel, your movie villain… He’s great!
Carlos Saldanha: Actually, Jermaine Clement was probably my only choice, so he had to work. I was a big fan of Flight of the Conchords and I was a big fan of him. What I loved about him was that I wanted his character to be a little over the top… after all, he was a soap star. So, I liked the idea of Jermaine bringing that flamboyance and bringing that fun sense of humour into the story and also I wanted him to sing because I had the idea of writing a musical in the middle with him telling his back story. That was always in my head and I think he brought it to life in a brilliant way.
in defense of native speakers of Portuguese i can say that, when we visited Sao Paulo, a bouncer at a club had no problem with the names of my friend "
luis"
and his family (all of whom had traditionally "
spanish"
names) but when it came to "
chrissy"
and "
elizabeth"
and "
nathan"
he couldn't do it. he just shook his head in disbelief and waved us through.
there really isn't an excuse for native english speakers, though.
