March 14, 2010
Kiwi filmmaker-actor Taika Waititi, pictured, and Kiwi actor Temuera Morrison, best known as Jango Fett from the "
Star Wars"
movies, have joined the cast of Warner Bros. "
Green Lantern."
Production begins this week in New Orleans on the 3D feature, which sees Martin Campbell directing Ryan Reynolds as the DC superhero.
Waititi plays the best friend of Hal Jordan, the test pilot who comes to wear the super-powered ring of the interplanetary police force known as the Green Lantern Corps.
Morrison is playing Abin Sur, a member of the Corps who is instrumental in Jordan becoming the superhero.
Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti are producing. The movie is set for a June 17, 2011 release.
Waititi, repped by CAA, first gained attention for writing and directing "
Two Cars, One Night,"
which earned him an Oscar nomination in 2005. His first feature, "
Eagle vs. Shark,"
won him best screenplay at the US Comedy Arts Festival and landed him work directing episodes of "
Flight of Conchords."
Waititi continued his indie career with "
Boy,"
which after three years of development, premiered at this past Sundance Film Festival. It was "
Boy"
that caught the attention of Campbell and Warners, which led to him being cast in "
Lantern."
Morrison, repped by Abrams Artists, recently wrapped the New Zealand-made thriller "
Tracker"
with Ray Winstone.
Ummmmm...yesterday I was looking at the New Orleans Film Commission's site trying to figure out if Taika was there doing a movie. " title="" border="0"/> I saw that this was filming currently, but couldn't find anything with him about it!

ADD: The listed release date for it is June 17, 2011.

From Jango Fett to Abin Sur…

Source: Heat Vision Blog
Green Lantern might be kicking off shooting in New Orleans this week, but Martin Campbell reached out to New Zealand for two new casting choices – Temuera Morrison and Taika Waititi have signed on.
Waititi – who wrote, directed and acted in Eagle Vs Shark – is playing the best mate of Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), the test pilot who ends up inheriting the super-powered ring worn by members of the Green Lantern Corps.
Morrison, still probably best known as Jango Fett from the Star Wars prequels, has an even more instrumental role – he’s Abin Sur, the Lantern who crashes on Earth and who passes that same ring to Jordan so that he might protect the planet.
It’s still not known whether Lantern will be shot in 3D or undergo the conversion process a al Clash Of The Titans, but either way it’ll arrive in cinemas next summer.

Waititi Green Lit in Green Lantern
Taika Waititi has joined the cast of fellow New Zealand director Martin Campbell's Green Lantern. Produced by Warner Bros Pictures the filming is set to start later this month in New Orleans. The film is scheduled for a mid-2011 release.
Waititi will play the best friend of the Green Lantern. The decision to cast Waititi in the role was made after Warner Bros casting director’
s watched New Zealand feature film, BOY, which Waititi wrote, directed and also stars in as the hapless but likeable father of two young boys being raised on the East Coast in 1984.
Ryan Reynolds will star as Green Lantern, with Blake Lively as his love interest Carol Ferris. Peter Sarsgaard will also star as Dr. Hector Hammond, the movie’
s villain who becomes infused with psychic powers, with Tim Robbins cast as his disapproving father, Senator Hammond.
Waititi’
s casting in the Green Lantern has meant he will not be in Auckland to attend the New Zealand premiere of his feature film, BOY, on Wednesday 24th March.
Before he left NZ, Waititi said, “
I really wanted to be in Auckland for the NZ premiere, but to be offered this role in Green Lantern is a great opportunity to pretend I'm an actor and pursue my dream of becoming the next Cliff Curtis. Typically, everyone in NZ has been supportive and understanding and encouraged me to accept the role. The premiere will be a great event without me. In fact, it's better I'm not there, I'm a terrible drunk and would just cause a scene. Seriously though, there are fantastic people working on making the premiere a great night;
I've been told a few of the plans and I know it will be choice. Anyway, there's no point in me taking up a seat in the audience...I've already seen it.”
BOY is financed by the New Zealand Film Fund, NZ Film Commission, Unison Films, NZ On Air, Maori Television Station and Te Mangai Paho. NZ Film, the sales arm of the NZFC, is handling world sales of the film.
BOY will be released on 50 screens nationwide in NZ through Transmission Films on Thursday, 25th March.

A little speculation on the recent casting rumors.
By Christopher Monfette 2 hours, 22 minutes ago
We reported yesterday that Temuera Morrison and Taika Waititi have both joined the cast of the Green Lantern film currently shooting in New Orleans. Morrison, better known as Jengo Fett in the Star Wars prequels, scored the part of Hal Jordan's predecessor and collaborator in the afterlife, Abin Sur, while Waititi was said to have taken on the role of Jordan's "
best friend."
None of the stories have officially attributed a name to that character, however, and our geeky little imaginations are left to toss and turn as to just whom that might be...
We suspect that Waititi will be playing Thomas "
Pieface"
Kalmaku, a schooled Inuit engineer at Hal Jordan's pre-Lantern employer, Ferris Aircraft. For the Green Lantern virgins in the audience, Kalmaku would serve as the Jimmy Olsen of the story, differentiated only by his knowledge of Jordan's new identity. Dating back to the Silver Age, Kalmaku chronicled Jordan's exploits in a series of journals which he eventually published as a biography of the iconic character. When he wasn't cracking wise or lending a hand with Jordan's universal crime-fighting, he was often in need of rescue, but as the series progressed, Pieface took on a larger and larger role, even being offered his own ring in a later arc.
Upbeat, humorous, handsome, and capable of joining in on the action, Kalmaku seems like a good fit for Waititi, whose comedic background and time spent working on Flight of the Conchords would seem to suggest that this is indeed the correct character. Even our friends at MTV have gotten in on the speculation, pointing out another non-Pieface possibility:
"
Earlier this month, it was announced that test footage for Green Lantern was being filmed in New Orleans that revolved around a stunt car. In the Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn miniseries, Hal Jordan is behind the wheel of a car accident that seriously injures his best friend. If that incident is being used in the film, then Waititi's character may be the one who is hurt in the crash."
Check back with UGO for more Green Lantern casting as it develops!

Thomas Kalmaku
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thomas Kalmaku is a fictional character, a supporting character associated with Green Lantern in DC Comics.
Fictional character biography
Thomas Kalmaku was introduced as a young Inuit engineer at Ferris Aircraft, also the employer of test pilot Hal Jordan. In the Silver Age he was referred to as Pieface (a play on Eskimo Pie), however this has not been used for some time. In his early appearances Thomas had a girlfriend named Terga. They later married, but have since separated.
Thomas was one of the few people who knew Hal Jordan's secret, and kept a journal of Green Lantern's adventures, which he later published as a biography of Hal Jordan. In several stories he either assisted the hero, or required rescuing. As a non-costumed sidekick, he served a similar role to Jimmy Olsen, except that Jimmy did not know Superman's identity.
During the Millennium crossover, Thomas is revealed to be one of the "
Chosen"
who forms the New Guardians. He has the superpower to bring out the best in people. He resides with the team for some time on a small island. When Guy Gardner appears on a boat to take over the team, Tom tries to calm the situation, as he and the team only wish to help Guy with his obvious anger problems. The situation degenerates and Guy is forcibly removed from the island by the power of Gloss. Later, Tom leaves the team to be with his family.
The graphic novel Legacy: The Last Will and Testament of Hal Jordan focuses on Tom, and his immense difficulty dealing with the aftermath of Hal's rampage and (several) deaths. In it he goes on a final mission on Hal's behalf, eventually reconstructing the planet Oa and the Great Battery, and fixing the relationship with his son, daughter, and wife, whose relationship had suffered miserably.
It is later revealed that he is about to become an equal partner in Carol Ferris's aircraft company. It is also mentioned that the Guardians of the Universe once offered Tom a Power Ring, but that he turned it down, with a simple "
naw."
It had originally been revealed in Legacy that Tom was Hal's choice to be his replacement.
Tom briefly featured in the "
Secret Origin"
storyline, which reworked some of the earlier parts of the Green Lantern mythos. In this new origin, Tom greatly disliked being called "
Pieface"
by an arrogant pilot, and was defended by Hal, who had just joined Ferris Aircraft.
Other versions
Tom makes a brief appearance in Darwyn Cooke's DC: The New Frontier miniseries (2003-2004), which is an alternate-universe story set in the 1950s. Here, Thomas angrily objects to the name Pieface when Hal Jordan first uses it, but quickly forgives him when he realizes there was no ill intent (Jordan had just overheard other pilots using the nickname).
In Other Media
A similar character called Kairo appeared in The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure.
It was announced on March 14, 2010, that Taika Waititi would portray Kalmaku in the upcoming live-action film, Green Lantern.

Hal Jordan fans take note: Warner Bros summarizes plot of new ‘Green Lantern’ film
The confirmation of a filmic version of a beloved comic franchise usually comes with an equal chorus of jeers and cheers. Comic nerds debate casting options, then rail against the final decision. Often, a screenplay leaks, and fans take it apart. By the time the film actually gets to screen, it (with a few exceptions – The Dark Knight, Iron Man) is usually spit on by the comic’s fanbase.
So perhaps it was a shrewd marketing move by Warner Bros to “leak” the summary for the forthcoming Green Lantern film.
A summary of the film’s novel adaptation was sent to some comic blogs over the weekend by a marketing company, and comicbookmovie.com confirmed with an representative that the “one-page was created and disseminated by our office on behalf of Time Warner.”
The film, due for release next summer, has not filmed yet, so perhaps this is a sly nod to fans to voice their displeasure at the concept, so the filmmakers can adjust accordingly.
Below, the complete synopsis:
- Spoiler:
‘Bringing the enduringly popular superhero to the big screen for the first time, “Green Lantern” stars Ryan Reynolds (
“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”)
in the title role, under the direction of Martin Campbell (
“Casino Royale”)
.
In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.
Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (
Blake Lively)
, if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.
Campbell directs “Green Lantern” from a screenplay by Greg Berlanti &
Michael Green &
Marc Guggenheim and Michael Goldenberg, story by Greg Berlanti &
Michael Green &
Marc Guggenheim, based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics.
The film also stars Blake Lively (upcoming “The Town,” TV’s “Gossip Girl”) as the spirited Carol Ferris, a test pilot and the heir apparent to her father’s aviation company;
Peter Sarsgaard (“An Education,” “Flightplan”) as scientist Dr. Hector Hammond;
Mark Strong (“Sherlock Holmes”) as Sinestro, Jordan’s powerful mentor in the Green Lantern Corps;
Jay O. Sanders (“Revolutionary Road”) as Carl Ferris, Carol’s aircraft designer dad;
Temuera Morrison (“Star Wars” Episodes II and III) as Abin Sur, Jordan’s alien predecessor;
Taika Waititi (TV’s “The Flight of the Conchords”) as flight navigator Tom Kalmaku, Hal’s good friend and confidante;
Academy Award nominee Angela Bassett (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as enigmatic government scientist Amanda Waller;
and Academy Award winner Tim Robbins (“Mystic River”) as Hector’s influential father, Senator Robert Hammond.
The film is being produced by Donald De Line (“The Italian Job”) and Greg Berlanti (upcoming “Life As We Know It”). Herbert W. Gains and Andrew Haas serve as executive producers. Geoff Johns and Lucienne Papon are co-producing.
The film’s behind-the-scenes creative team is led by a number of Academy Award winners, including director of photography Dion Beebe (“Memoirs of a Geisha”), production designer Grant Major (“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”), and costume designer Ngila Dickson (“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”), as well as Oscar-nominated editor and longtime Campbell collaborator, Stuart Baird (“Gorillas in the Mist,” “Superman”). The film’s visual effects are being overseen by Oscar-nominee Kent Houston (“The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen,” “Casino Royale”).
The film is currently scheduled for release in 3D and 2D on June 17, 2011. “Green Lantern” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. ‘

So I did end up getting into the panel for this movie! Taika wasn't there (not that I expected him to be ) but some of the cast was there, including Ryan Reynolds and Mark Strong! :#aziz#:
They showed a teaser trailer for the movie and Taika wasn't in it as far I could tell. I was scanning for him to see if he was standing in the background of a scene, because I didn't expect them to show clips of him talking or anything, but I was hoping to at least find out what he looks like in the movie. It was one of those trailers where they flash between clips really quickly, though, so it's possible I missed him (especially if they changed his looks at all).
I was hoping someone might bring him up in some way during the panel but they never did. They mentioned quite a few times that the Green Lantern has lots and lots of characters, and how they went about choosing which ones would make it into this movie, which makes me wonder how big Taika's part is even going to be. I don't know anything about the Green Lantern, but they made it seem like there would be a whole bunch of supporting characters... :#shrug#:
Someone (I think it was the writer...) said that they had enough material for several movies, and everyone there was talking about it as if it was already a fact that they would be making multiple movies. Not surprising since most movies of this type have at least one sequel, but still nice to hear. Now we just have to hope Taika's character sticks around for all those movies! :#aziz#:
Oh and just so you guys know, Ryan Reynolds is awesome. A little boy went up and asked him what it was like to say the Green Lantern's oath and he said "
Oh you are just the cutest-"
(which he was :#happyyes#: :#inlove#: )and then recited the whole thing for him and signed something for him...the whole thing was really adorable. And someone else asked them what they would dress up as if they were to go to Comic Con in costume and right away he said something like "
I would go as a Wookie because I would want to be cute and dangerous"
. :#lol#: :#love3#:
ADD: I have no idea how I was able to post that much when I really have no news about Taika... :#haha#:

Awesome!! :#love3#: :#love3#: :#love3#:
So I did end up getting into the panel for this movie! Taika wasn't there (not that I expected him to be ) but some of the cast was there, including Ryan Reynolds and Mark Strong! :#aziz#:
They showed a teaser trailer for the movie and Taika wasn't in it as far I could tell. I'm glad you were able to get in! :#cheer#: That's too bad that you weren't able to see Taika in anything, but it sounds like it was interesting anyway, at least. That makes me happy that Ryan Reynolds was like that. :#love3#: Thanks so much for sharing! :#glomp#:
Dropping this interview in here because he talks about Green Lantern starting around ~7:55:
Like you said, hopefully we'll see him again in future GL movies, if they do happen. :#cheer#:

Taika Waititi as Tom Kalmaku
July 26, 2010
After Adam Beach left the Green Lantern movie, I forgot to pursue the matter. If Beach isn't playing Tom Kalmaku, then who is?
Comic-Con reminded me that Green Lantern is coming, so here's the scoop:
Taika Waititi
Birth Name
Taika David Waititi
Height
6' 2"
(1.88 m)
Mini Biography
Taika is of Te-Whanau-a-Apanui descent and hails from the Raukokore region of the East Coast. He has been involved in the film industry for several years, initially as an actor, and now focusing on writing and directing.
Trivia
He is of Maori and European-Jewish descent.
Comment: Once again, Hollywood casts a non-Native in a Native role. Yes, Waititi is indigenous (Maori), so he isn't the worst choice possible. But he isn't Inuit like Tom Kalmaku. Adam Beach would've been closer to the mark.
I include his height because it shows how casting changes the character in subtle ways. Kalmaku is supposedly 5'7"
, although he looks more like 5'3"
or 5'4"
. He's a typically short Inuit person. Making him tall means he can push his way through crowds. He doesn't have to be as bright because he has a strong physical presence.
Let's see...Waititi has played 13 roles before Kalmaku. None of them look big or impressive, although they may have been in New Zealand. My initial impression is that Waititi doesn't have any special qualifications to play Kalmaku.
Once again, the producers hired any ol' brown-skin because they're all the same, right? They didn't hire one of the thousands of Native actors who's closer to Kalmaku physically and culturally than Waititi is. They certainly didn't try to find an Inuit actor--unlike, say, the producers of Sikumi or Everybody Loves Whales. They went for a simple, expedient choice rather than a good and proper one.
And what about all the Inuit aspiring to be actors? Oh, well...maybe next time. The next time somebody does a major studio film featuring a major Inuit character, that is.
For more on the subject, see The Many Faces of Tom Kalmaku and Casting Tom Kalmaku.
Below: "
We both look vaguely brown and Asiatic. What else do you want?"
First of all, :#sadno#: for the overall tone of this.
Also, this guy gets a hefty :#fingerwave#: from me for doubting Taika's abilities. He doesn't know who he's dealing with! ( :;
D: ) However, even Taika has made comments about how the producers were looking for someone who was "
ethnic"
but not necessarily Inuit, and he fit the general bill.
Still :#fingerwave#: , dude.

If I didn't check the profile picture, I would think that the author of this article is an Inuit actor who lost the chance to play Kalmaku, because of Taika got the role.
This part made me boiling:
What a duche! :#fit#: :#fit#: :#fit#: :#fit#:
