Review of the Copenhagen show:

Last Sunday Flight of the Conchords stopped by Copenhagen for a concert. As I’ve mentioned before, I adore FotC so I’d got a ticket and was really excited about seeing the guys live.
I was not disappointed. The show was kicked off even before Bret and Jemaine entered the stage by Arj Baker, the actor who plays Dave in the television series, which I think was a stroke of genius. I’d been wondering who they might get to open for the band – I couldn’t think of any type of band that wouldn’t feel out of place as a warm-up band for a FotC concert, the duo being comedians as much as they are musicians. Some random stand-up comedian would have felt out of place, too, given FotC’s singular comedy style. Arj Baker fit in perfectly as a comedic prelude, the audience obviously knew and recognised him from the series (and laughed so hard at his act that it actually seemed to be difficult for him to get his points across sometimes!), and he was genuinely funny.
And of course it raised the roof when Bret and Jemaine came on stage. I mainly associate FotC with their TV show, but the guys were doing stage performances well before their acting debut, and they’re excellent at it. As comedians, the Conchords have this delightful dead-pan innocence to them that ties their entire act together. We know it from the TV series in which the main premise was that the two New Zealanders were oblivious to big city life a la New York (see, for instance, their introduction to the act of “flipping the bird”, or to sexually aggressive women), but this works well in their on-stage act, too. Throughout the concert Bret and Jemaine told intentionally tame stories from their rock’n roll experiences on the road: Like that one time when Bret took one of Jemaine’s hay fever pills (“And I didn’t have hay fever!”) and got a little drowsy. Or the time they were both unable to resist the temptation of a free muffin they found in their hotel room. Or that other time they were stuck in an elevator for a really long time (before realising that it wasn’t moving because neither of them had pushed the button). It’s both funny and adorable, and I absolutely love it.
I feel like it’s the same air of innocence that makes their parody music work. They do parodies extremely well, but there is never anything mocking and malicious about them. They seem to genuinely enjoy the music they play, regardless of the genre, and they sing and play with a childlike lack of reservations that’s really endearing.
And they certainly played a great selection of their music on Sunday! We were treated to classics such as “Think, Think About It“, “If You’re Into It“, “It’s Business Time“, “Inner City Pressure“, and my beloved “Choir of Ex-Girlfriends” all of them played with the Conchords’ usual energy and brilliance. My most pleasant surprise of the night was the fact that they also did an on-stage performance of the Korean karaoke “Oh, Dance, Baby”, karaoke video playing in the background and everything,

and then a fantastic new song that I’ve never heard before. It was called “Woo a Lady” and was a parody of a typical English medieval ballad. The lyrics were hilarious, Jemaine did the vocals wonderfully, and Bret rocked the recorder.
“He said there are three things that I must see./One florin and two forms of ID./I said alas I have no ID on me,/Who even carries ID in 1353?/I maketh not the rules quoth he.”
“…the hairdo’s a little 1351,/In fact, it makes you look,/A bit like a lady./I swore as you approached, that you were a lady./And that gigantic horse just emphasises that you look like a lady./And I replied yes, yes I heard you the first time.”
Hee!! I think this may be a new favourite FotC song of mine.
All in all the conchords gave a terrific show, and they even took a request from the audience (“Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor”). The only downside was the sound in the concert hall, Falconer Salen in Frederiksberg, which was perfect most of the time, but which tended to drown out the vocals in some of the more noisy or bass-dominated songs such as “She’s So Hot – Boom”, “Demon Woman”, and “Too Many Dicks”. Oh, and I was kind of sad that I didn’t get to hear “I Told You I Was Freaky“, and “Pretty Prince of Parties“, but I guess there’s no way they would ever be able to cover their entire repertoire.

A new story " title="" border="0"/> and it got me wonder if Jemaine is allergic, because I remember from the BBC radio show that he sneezed in their fans' house. They had a cat ("
Jemaine is allergic to Jemaine"
).

Yay new story " title="" border="0"/>
My cat hair intolerant, hay-fevered self can relate. (except I'm pretty sure I'm not allergic to Jemaine.)
