The amazing new video for the single was released to Music Television this week. The video, shot in Island Bay, Wellington over one, long 16-hour day in mid August, was directed by Oscar nominated Taika Waititi (Two Cars One Night, Eagle Vs Shark), with whom The Phoenix Foundation wrote the soundtrack for his latest box office film Eagle Vs Shark.

Developed by Samuel Flynn Scott and Luke Buda (who spend way too many hours on you Tube…), the concept was inspired by Japanese ‘synth pop’ legends Yellow Magic Orchestra, and features loads of synths, bored musicians, the ‘Back to the Future’ car, an audience of weird 80’s kids, heaps of dried ice…….and all things cool..

He has been given funding to make his Oscar-nominated short film, Two Cars One Night, into a feature.

In the meantime however, wrestlers, 1980s rockers and an assortment of animals are among the crowd attempting to prevent a man from kissing a damsel and mounting a horse in The Phoenix Foundation's '40 Years' video, the latest brainchild from director Waititi.

It is shot in one continuous stretch, but the four-minute video was not the time saver he had expected.

I thought the best use of my time was trying to do something in one shot, so usually when you put yourself in the situation it takes a lot longer than you'd expect,"
he says. "
Thus it's taken all day just to do this one shot."


But a day at the beach did not dampen the band's spirits.

"
I'm really excited about this video,"
says singer Samuel Scott. "
I mean, Taika's just got some loopy idea I don't entirely understand, and none of us have really seen the whole thing as we're all at different parts of this confidence course."


It is not the first time they hae all worked together. A shared desire to move away from brooding music video stereotypes has kept the collaborations coming.

Two Cars, One Night was nominated for an Oscar at the 2005 Academy Awards, and Waititi now has funding to make it into a feature.

"
It's about Maori kids growing up in the country in the '80s, around the time that the Thriller music video came out, and what a life-changing experience that was for everyone, and I'm trying to capture that in this movie,"
he says.

He has been working on the film for four years, and with a confirmed budget three times larger than Eagle Vs Shark, Waititi promises his new project will be three times as good.
