Not sure how accurate IMDB is when it comes to this, but on their page he has fourth billing!! Which made me think from the start that he would have to have a major role in it. Zach Galifianakis has fifth billing and he was shown in the trailer a lot. (But they are probably wanting to ride "
The Hangover"
wave. ;
) )

Luckily we're getting further confirmation, but I'm still thinking he has a bigger role than we think. <img src=" title="Very Happy" border="0"/> [image]

Jemaine isn't credited in the last Despicable Me trailer and look how much of him we have there. [image]

[size=150:agpzfuti]Early Buzz: Dinner for Schmucks Test Screening
Posted on Friday, April 23rd, 2010 by Peter Sciretta

[size=100:agpzfuti]
/Film reader LA-Oneder got a chance to see the first test screening of Austin Powers/Meet the Parents helmer Jay Roach’s upcoming comedy Dinner for Schmucks, which stars Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. The film tells the story of a rising executive who “succeeds” in finding the perfect guest, an IRS employee, for his boss’s monthly event, a so-called “dinner for idiots,” which offers certain advantages to the exec who shows up with the biggest buffoon. Here si the official plot synopsis:

“Dinner for Schmucks” tells the story of Tim (Paul Rudd), a guy on the verge of having it all. The only thing standing between him and total career success is finding the perfect guest to bring to his boss’ annual Dinner for Extraordinary People, an event where the winner of the evening brings the most eccentric character as his guest. Enter Barry (Steve Carell), a guy with a passion for dressing mice up in tiny outfits to recreate great works of art. From Jay Roach, director of “Meet the Parents” and “Meet the Fockers” comes an unforgettable feast about two unlikely friends and one very memorable dinner.

The film is a remake of the french comedy film Le Diner de Cons. The movie co-stars Ron Livingston, Bruce Greenwood, Jemaine Clement, Stephanie Szostak, Jeff Dunham, Rick Overton, and Zach Galifianakis.

Hit the jump to read LA-Oneder’s early thoughts on the movie.

Disclaimer:
As with any test screening, you should be aware that this version of the film is not final. Filmmakers hold test screenings to see how the movie plays for an audience, with the plan to possibly address issues before the theatrical release. And it should also be noted that the opinions below are not from professional reviewers, but regular audience members who attended the screening. The bottom line is, take this for what it is, an early look at what the film might be.

Hey guys,

I saw the first screening of Dinner for Shmucks at the Sony studio with 80 others and Jay Roach hosting. I know that it was the first screening and included a lot of footage that they were testing, but overall it was a unfunny and borderline offensive film. The cut I saw was almost 2 and a half hours long and Jay said would be trimmed a lot.

I think it’s important to note that Jay Roach spent about 90 minutes after the film questioning the audience about really specific pieces of the film to gauge reaction. He seemed very open to edits and character changes based on audience reaction and welcomed very hard criticism. Hopefully Dinner for Schmucks will find it’s focus one one or two main story lines and eliminate the half dozen other inane adventures.

Here are my thoughts:

* Paul Rudd was basically playing the same character as he did in I Love You, Man

Bad stuff:

* His love interest was cute but ultimately useless and had no funny parts.

* Steve Carell’s character isn’t an idiot, but honestly seems more mildly retarded. He really is unaware of his social skills in what seems to be consistent to being on the autism spectrum. This portrayal of a “shmuck” could be considered offensive towards some more sensitive viewers.

* There is a lot of wasted talent in the film. Nick Kroll, Ron Livingston and others are hardly used and have nothing funny to do.

* There are so many characters and story lines that the story gets convoluted and confusing and by the end the audience can’t decipher what relationships we should care about.

* The actual dinner is over-the-top silliness in a really annoying way. They basically have to spell out every joke explicitly to make sure you really get it and the Shmucks they bring are flat one time jokes (creepy vantiliquist, bird caller, blind fencer).

* The comedy set pieces would often stray from the plot and cause major pacing problems.

Good stuff:

[size=133:agpzfuti] * Jermaine and Zach Galifinakis play limited but very funny characters and outshine the other actors.

* The props (stuffed mice seen in the trailer) and title sequence are impressively funny and really unique.

* Jay was very receptive to criticisms and his team sounded open to adjusting things towards the audiences feelings.

Thanks for reading guys. I love the podcast and listen every week.

i imagine that perhaps this is part of a fantasy or nightmare sequence where the main character, who is vying with jemaine's character for the leading lady, imagines his competition is satan.

the picture with nelson mandela suggests that his opponent in the battle for the woman's affections has an effective and powerful arsenal of charm and graces at his command.

eta: ok - finally watched the trailer. hrm. steve carell's character is spying on paul rudd's competition, perhaps? and jemaine's character is into kinky sex photo shoots?

[image] speculating about the film based on that small part is a fun game!

most importnatly, it's jemaine, who WOULDN'T fall for him... even if he were satan/ a satyr.

at least, that would be my guess based on what we've got here.
;<br />D

eta: i'm going to go so far as to suggest that perhaps he's a bit of a Bono character? the save the world but get all the girls type?

ETA2 : 'course, i'm completely going off of the gif here since, even though i've downloaded quicktime, the site is clearly a moron, and won't let me see the trailer [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] [image]

I have one thing to say and that is I'm a little afraid of the sounds I will make in the movie theatre the first time Jemaine comes on screen. [image] [image]

I wonder if it's possible to rent out the theatre... ? Hmmmmm
