I'm new to the forum, although I've been reading for the past few months. I made an account just to share my experience though. Alright, review for the first show! I already posted my review of the second show in the other thread. The first one had a ton of songs but the second one had more banter was hilarious. If you had to ask me, I would say I preferred the first show because of the more variety of songs, but I was definitely fortunate enough to go to both.
My girlfriend and I got there at 5:30pm but apparently there was a fire alarm earlier so the show was going to be delayed half an hour. We finally got in and rushed the merch stand... along with everyone else. It must have taken us half an hour to get stuff and we missed half of Arj's set. I bought a Band Meeting ringer shirt and a poster. The poster was pretty classy, it had all the cities that FOTC toured on it. It was a nice summation of the tour.
Came in during half of Arj's set and it was hard to find our seats. By the time we were in our right seats, Arj was telling his Blueshield and Radio fine print joke. Glad I went to the second show to catch what he said.
Setlist! To the best of my memory with some songs possibly out of order:
Too many dicks
Hurt Feelings - new little red was played! Sorry I couldn't get a video of it, but I hope someone did.
Stana
Robots: During the part where Jemaine points out that what the robots are doing are like the humans and Bret goes "
destroy him"
, Jemaine used an Arnold Schwarzenegger accent, which was pretty flippin' good. When Bret said "
Destroy him!"
, Jemaine yelled out NOOOOOOOOOOO!
Who likes to rock the party (tease)
The most beautiful girl in the room
Jenny
I told you I was freaky
Foux de Fa Fa
I'm not crying
Muther'uckas
Rhymenoceros vs. the Hiphopopotamus (I personally thought that was a good transition between songs)
Bowies in Space - Jemaine put his fingers in front of his shirt simulating Bowie's nipple antannae while Bret used the new toy piano to receive a transmission.
Same girl/Sugalumps: During the song, Bret took someone's phone and took a picture of his crotch "
I'm putting my sugalumps in your phone's memory."
To which Jemaine responded, "
Now his lumps will come on when you call."
Or something similar.
Encore: So many people left not expecting an encore! It was shocking and I tried to tell people but they wouldn't listen.
Bus Driver's Song
Business Time.
(copied from my other post): After the first show ended, I came out and stopped by the merch table where Arj was signing stuff and taking pictures. I got him to sign my tour poster (which is really nice - it has the cities of all the tour and it's pretty much the summation of the tour itself). I also have this screen-writing book that I have people I like and write a piece of advice. I asked Arj to write something in it but he just signed it and said that I could probably give him better advice than he could.
While I was waiting for my girlfriend, I saw Nigel come out in the hallway. I quickly ran up to him and had him sign my poster and book. His piece of advice was "
Know thy self."
"
It's not original,"
he said. Anyway, I think the highlight of both shows was having this ten minute conversation with Nigel. None of the fans seemed to know who he was so it was just me and him standing there talking. He told me that they were really excited to be done with the tour. He personally was going to stick around San Francisco for a week and than head over for New York for a week before heading back to New Zealand. I asked him about the Ukulele Orchestra and he was surprised about how many people knew about it. He told me that they were suppose to come this year but because of the economic climate, they are going to be coming to the states next year. He had to run back in after that, so I went out to get my tickets and came back in.
Highlights of the show were:
- Jemaine's Arnold Impression in Robots
- The multiple Jemaine and Bret on the projector stunt. Right after the video that was posted cuts out when jemaine is like stop cutting back to me, he goes"
why do you keep cutting back to me?"
Jumbotron Jemaine then proceeds to use his hands to pretend he's trying to pick up Bret while making roaring noises.
- Jemaine burns some guy in the crowd. "
You got to be quick with a funny response. Look what happened to that guy"
Jemaine makes a burning noise while pointing at him.
Songs in the other show not in this one -
- Cellotape
- Carol Brown
- Epilectic Dogs
- Freebird
They did not do a meet and greet although Mark came out and gave away the robot heads. I got a picture with it on. I have some other pictures (mostly of the guys thrusting at things) and some videos that I'll post when I get off work. Overall a great show, and although I'm sad I didn't get to meet them. I'm glad I had a great uninterrupted conversation with Nigel and that I got to meet Arj again.

In Phoenix, Jemaine talked about Bret's jizz!!!!
Bret looked embarrassed, but then he started talking about his own jizz so the show had a happy ending.

source:[size=133:nunc78so]Flight of the Conchords: still New Zealand's 4th most popular folk parody duo despite obstacles
May 26, 2009
Jamie Freedman
[size=100:nunc78so]Despite faulty fire alarms, bad mics and clogged toilets, Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement left Berkeley in stitches last night.
The Community Berkeley Theater was a bizarre choice for a show like this, considering the duo sold out Davies Hall last year and seemed a tad ill-equipped to handle so many people twice in one night. I wonder how the Berkeley High kids deal. In a voiceover starting the show, Jemaine informed the audience that we were not there for a school assembly, just in case anyone was wondering.
Due to a malfunctioning auditorium fire alarm, the 6pm crowd was still wrapped around the building at 6pm. Warm up act and Bay Area local Arj Barker, who plays Dave on the HBO series, had some quality moments in his act. One punchline was definitely ruined by a shotty mic. Maybe we were spared a rotten joke... we might never find out.
(Arj will be performing at Cobb's Comedy Club in San Francisco June 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.)
Bret and Jemaine began their set with a favorite second season tune, "
Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor"
in makeshift aluminum and cardboard robot costumes. Jemaine was sporting one of his uber-cowboy-hipster button down shirts while Bret looked a little like one of the Gibb brothers from the Bee Gees in his powder blue sports jacket and greasy mass of hair.
They busted out first season favorites like "
Jenny,"
"
The Humans are Dead,"
"
Hiphopopotomus vs. Rhymnosorous"
and "
Business Time"
and a couple newer tunes that I didn't recognize (I haven't been able to see the whole new season). One parodied a Johnny Cash murder ballad about an evil man named Stana (Satan with some inverted letters for the slower folks) who challenged authority everywhere he went and even said "
f--k you"
to gravity, and then floated away. And then somehow it ended up being about doppelgängers, I'm not sure what happened there, it was a long song as Bret and Jemaine pointed out in their brilliantly awkward stage banter.
I am always amazed at Bret and Jemaine's musicianship. Their act would not work if they did not play as well as they do. Jemaine whipped out some crazy unidentifiable electronic instrument at one point and Bret played no less than three instruments including guitar, piano and drums. They are both skilled acoustic guitarists and can probably sing better than they let on in their act. They were also joined by the National New Zealand Orchestra consisting of one cellist named Nigel. We were told that the recession has hit New Zealand rather hard.
The highlight of the show was undoubtedly, "
Sugar Lumps"
when accompanied by the National New Zealand Orchestra, the boys stepped out in front of their instruments and shook their sugar lumps in the faces of the first few rows. I've heard from the 9pm show that Jemaine stuck an audience member's camera down his pants. I'd like to see those pictures...
