Cool, I'm going to one of his shows too (28th July) with a friend. When are you going? Btw more dates have been added due to popular demand. At the moment, he's playing 27th,28th,30th,31st July and the 1st August. I'm really looking forward to it, should be good fun [image]

If anyone else is interested tickets can be bought at

Oh wow, I didn't know he had added more dates. And 3 at that! I'll be there on Monday, Row F!! I basically saw his myspace blog moments after he posted it and bought tickets (almost) immediately. There was a bit of a 'holding breath' moment when trying to contact my friends about tickets. I bought four anyway as I didn't want to lose the great seats!

Good stuff! I got seats in the third row (Stalls, Row C) so hopefully I'll be able to see everything. [image] Bloomsbury isn't that big anyway so everyone should be in for a great night wherever they're sitting!

Row C...lucky woman! I'm tall, so I can generally see well at these things anyway. I've never been to the Bloomsbury before. I wonder if he'll have any support acts?

I think all the seats in the stalls are tiered so as long as no one is exceedingly tall, everyone should be able to see above people's heads! Ah yes, I wonder whether he'll have a support act too. Also, have you thought about trying to meet Rhys after the show? It just crossed my mind and I suppose I could hang around for a bit but the only thing is that I would have work the following morning so I can't stay out too late.

I desperately want to, but I have never done anything like that before so I have no idea how it is all supposed to work. Plus, when I mentioned it to my boyfriend he was a bit mean and said I was 'sad' for wanting to wait behind and that it would be embarrassing [image] I don't really care that he thinks that, I just don't want to feel pressured into leaving immediately by him and our friends who we are going with. I may have to put my foot down! [image]

Where do you live, are you having to travel far to get there? I think we are staying over as we live up North! You could always feign illness to work...or get there late and live with the consequences for a day, but be comforted knowing you have met Rhys! [image]

Yeah I haven't stayed for a 'meet and greet' before either so I'm not entirely sure how it will work. I was thinking that it would be a little weird hanging around a stage door waiting for him to come out but I can't help thinking how great it would be to meet him. Hopefully there'll be other people there too haha! I'm not sure whether my friend would mind hanging around for a while. We're both going to be working at the same place over the summer so we're both in the same boat! I just had a look at one of the threads in this forum when Rhys had a mini tour in America and it looks like people didn't have to wait that long to meet him so I hope this is the case for us so I can get back home at a decent time.

Oh I live in London so travel isn't too much of an issue other than the fact that I want to take the tube back home so I have to leave before the tube stations shut. That's cool you're coming from the North. Yeah it's probably best that you do stay over for the night. If you really want to try and meet him then you should really try and convince those you are going with. I'm sure they'll thank you in the end ;
). Shame we're not going on the same night but we should deffo compare notes on how it all goes <img src=" title="Very Happy" border="0"/>

Yeah! [image] Both times I've met him I didn't have to wait at all really. The first time a bunch of people kinda caught him before he left and then the second time someone yelled "
Come on out,Rhys!"
and he came out like a few minutes after the show [image]

I hope you get to meet him [image] [image] He's really nice [image]

Thanks for the info, that's good to know. I'll probably try and see what happens then Smile

3 stars out of 5

Before he became famous to comedy fans as Murray the manager in the Flight of the Conchords television series, Rhys Darby was a crazily talented comedian who needed only more focus to become a star. Now the New Zealander is back in Britain, playing six sold-out London dates before starting a run at the Edinburgh Fringe next week. Darby is a poised, distinctive stage presence, with some great set pieces. But unlike his countrymen, the Conchords, he has yet to find a way to string all his good ideas into a coherent whole.

So what we get here — in a two-hour show, including the support act, Greg Burns, that will be slimmed down to one hour and one comedian for Edinburgh — is an enjoyable show with too many lulls to keep the spirits high throughout, even with this partisan, Murray-loving crowd cheering him on.

It’s the fastidious yet loveably hopeless Murray who has advanced Darby’s career to the extent that he has just finished his first starring role in a film. It is when exploring his adventures in the hinterland of stardom that Darby is at his best. Telling warming gags about the way his Kiwi parochialism contrasts with Hollywood hustle, he conveys beautifully what it feels like to be an “alien with exceptional ability” — that’s what it says on his visa.

As a stand-up, Darby has long traded on his physical comedy and knack for sound effects (clanking robots a speciality). As he mocks the shrillness of his own tones, illustrates how incomprehensible his accent seems to American cab drivers, how he deals with big-deal, deep-voiced agents, his charm and his skills combine perfectly.

I’d happily sit through hours of such stuff. But he dilutes this with character comedy that is less achieved. His park ranger, contrasting Kiwi ordinariness with a more fantastical bent, is pretty good. His UFO-spotter and whale watcher are weak. But his funniest routine has him imitating a malfunctioning Transformer robot. Yeah, doesn’t sound much. But he makes a hack idea hilarious through his physical skill and commitment to the joke.

There are more highlights: a rant at his sat-nav, self-deprecating jokes about his status as second banana to the Conchords, all played with the sort of pretend dweebiness that can be pulled off only by the secretly self-assured. Darby is a terrific, distinctive performer. But he has yet to perfect the great comic’s knack of using sheer force of personality to make disparate ideas feel as if they belong together.

Tonight sold out. Thursday to August 15, Udderbelly’s Pasture, Edinburgh, 08445 458252,
